Re: iOS tuner apps?

The other possibility, is the intonation of the instrument being off... Nope, it's a Taylor and the intonation is dead-nuts on. Also middle D on my piano gives the same 4 cents off. Also if I tune my guitar up with the Peterson and play a chord, the D is definitely out of tune even when it's the op...

Re: iOS tuner apps?

I had one of their clip-ons which was great. But the app plain sucked, always got the D string on my acoustic wrong by about 4 cents. They couldn't figure it out, I traded a few emails with tech support and sent sound samples and everything. Interesting! Can’t say I’ve seen that. Wonder if it could...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Grabbed another Lauten LS-208 for vocal stage use on the music broadcast gig I work. Been using one about a year and it’s sounded great on most everyone. The LS-308 I got earlier in the year has also been great for acoustic bass, especially with drums onstage. Definitely a specialty mic, hasn’t real...

Re: Langevin

AM-16's are fully push-pull, most things aren't. That defines a lot about the type of distortion made. Most of The Sonics sound would seem to be tape overload, and possibly the tape machine's electronics overload.

Re: The age old debate of grounding the shield/shell on XLRs

I’ve repaired a lot of ribbon mics over the years, and I find across many microphones, having the microphone body connected to ground, which is often provided by a grounded shell, results in a microphone that rejects noise better. Some mics will connect pin 1 to the body, but many do not. $.02 Jon ...

Re: The age old debate of grounding the shield/shell on XLRs

I forget right now what I’m missing - what would the problem be? Shell connection should just extend shielding to the connection gap. Shield wire should connect through either way. You encounter poorly shielded/grounded equipment, it’s not the cable’s fault. Chassis xlr should ground immediately to ...

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?

It's almost always a ribbon here, seems to capture the best blend of note value and body versus transients. Mando transients in a dense fast mix can just sound like nasty percussion with no note value if it goes wrong.
