Re: 30-second soundbytes or whole songs?
Sure, mp3s suck for full-on pleasure listening through your awesome stereo, but for getting a taste of a group over the internet, probably on crappy computer speakers, it's just fine. Besides, it's free. It's just a taste to see if you want to buy the CD. And yes, whole songs. When I decide whether ...

Re: timing
Well, the issue was that the drums were being picked up by the mono close mic and a bunch of faraway mics. So i'd guess you'd pan the mono close mic in the center, and pan the faraway mics around it to create stereo-ness.

Re: What to do about a loud hard drive?
I am lucky enough to have a tiny office room off my living room, so i use the former as a control room (headphones only!) and the latter for tracking. If you have only one room to record in, can you put just the computer outside the door in the hallway or next room? You wouldn't be taking up much sp...

Re: delimma/question
Only if it's a sound business move, like if your studio is booked for a certain period and you know you can cover the cost of the gear, or if you know that prospective clients will want that piece of gear and be willing to pay for it. For your own project studio that does not generate income, i'd sa...

Re: Rode Mics
I've used the NTK a couple times and liked it very much. It's very thick and full and colored, and seems to compress the sound a little bit, bringing everything forward. I think it probably wouldn't be good to use it on every track, because your mix would be mud. I tried out the NT1000 once, and it ...

Re: my odd perspective on modern mastering
DJ, it sounds like you're going for a kind of lo-fi effect with clipping, using computer processing. That's probably different than what the expensive mastering engineers would do, which is more like ironing everything flat. If you've found an effect that works for your music, then obviously you sho...

Re: timing
I suppose Mr. Brown probably used a hardware delay box of some kind, but these days I think lots of folks would just nudge the track over by the right amount in their computer editing rig.

My guess would be that they're running out of those.

Re: I need some knowledge...
I'm afraid i have nothing useful to add, but this thread made me reflect that Tape Op mag is probably one of the best resources for this sort of thing. The knowledge that is dropped in every issue is amazing, and really spans a range of music cultures and time periods.

Re: The collest thing you learned from tape op?
That the philosophy and style of the recording engineer or producer, and the tales they tell about the recording, sometimes actually are reflected on the recording itself. I bought two Talk Talk records because i liked what Phil Brown had to say about recording them, and they immediately made my all...

Re: AKG mics
The C1000 definitely has a sound. It's nowhere near flat, and has a sharp upper-midrange presence thing. I agree that it can be useful at various times, like for a certain kind of electric guitar sound. I've also used it on viola, and I've seen it used well on acoustic guitar and even vocals, but in...

Re: mackie 1202
buying my 1202-vlz was my first major gear upgrade. i used it to replace the preamp/mixer section of my 4-track, using aux returns and direct tape outs. it was a really huge upgrade, and made my 4-track stuff actually sound pretty good. that said, i'm happy to have something better now and not have ...

Re: Strangest Studio Techniques U Ever Used?
Dropped a radioshack tie-clip mic inside the soundhole of an acoustic guitar, combined it with the direct signal from the piezo pickup. the mic was low and woofy sounding, the piezo was really bright and pokey... it was a good combination.

Re: Any "affordable" monitors with good low end?
I think low end is the part most seriously affected by room acoustics. Your room might have problems (most do) that won't be helped by new monitors.
