Drum Heads

I'm debating drum heads with a drummer right now. I think single-ply heads sound better than dual-ply (Pinstripes, for example) for recording. Dual-ply sound crappy and muffled to me. The drummer wants to use Powerstrokes because they have built-in muffling, which is precisely the reason I DON'T wan...

Re: suggestions for Win XP multitracker...

This is a little off-topic, but I'd recommend Win2K instead of XP. Less overhead in the OS means more resources (therefore more tracks, plugins, etc) for your audio apps. To answer your question, I like Cubase SX. I've been using Cubase for years, so it's hard for me to say how easy or hard it is to...

Re: Another "check out my crappy music" request

the vocals are lost here and there because of the crossover of frequency with the guitars - I think a re-mix bearing this in mind might mean you take away a little in the low-mid eq to free up some room for the vocals? Thanks, I'll look at that. The other is that the bottom end seems a bit flat to ...

Re: New Metallica

does anyone notice the bass drum weirdness? Yeah, the problem is that Lars is a shitty drummer. His kick hits are really uneven. Watch the DVD--it's not fixed up in the studio. His timing is atrocious, and he can't play the parts that are on this record. It's embarrassing. I mean, Lars has always b...

Re: New Metallica

I, too, think that it soundz funny, and that it rocks. I hear a little GNR in that snare sound, too. Knowing that Rock could have delivered huge drum sounds, and didn't, adds to the coolness. Knowing that Rock could have mixed his own bass playing way higher, and didn't, adds to the coolness. Knowi...

Re: Another "check out my crappy music" request

The only thing I don't really like is the snare. I think a deeper snare would sound better. Really? Oh man, I love the snare sound. Come on, listen to the snare in the mellow parts of "Above as Down Below" where you can really hear it and tell me that doesn't sound good! OK, my personal p...

Re: New Metallica

'downloaded it...fuck you Lars.' For the record, I have paid for all the music I listen to, some 700 CD's--including six other Metallica albums (Kill 'Em All thru the Black Album). This is the first album I've ever downloaded that I have no intention to pay for. I've discovered a lot of cool music ...

Re: New Metallica

I've been listening to it for a while now (downloaded it, no intent to purchase, fuck you, Lars  ). The whole album sounds like a demo. The snare drum just SUCKS--it's the most annoying snare sound I've ever heard. Like ...Justice , the bass guitar is MIA (maybe a good thing since it's Bob ...

I'd love to check this out for you, but I'm not willing to register on MP3.com to do it. Can you host it somewhere that doesn't require you to sign up for something?

Re: tell me what you think.

keep in mind the vocals are horrible and i did this with very minimal and very bad equipment. When you put it like that, how can I resist? First off, you're right about the vocals. Ouch. I think that given the band you were working with, you did a pretty good job. I like the drum sounds (first thin...

Re: Looking for opinions on my mp3...

Yep , the drums are programmed. I'm really unhappy with them but I don't have the skill nor the room to put down real drums yet. I understand that. My main problem with programmed drums is that people often have the drums do things that would be difficult or impossible for a real drummer to pull of...

Re: Another "check out my crappy music" request

Thanks, great feedback. I'm a fairly novice engineer, so it's quite possible that I'm overcompressing. There's no compression at all on the guitar tracks, but I'm running the master buss thru the UAD-1 1176 plugin. Don't remember what settings I'm using, I'd have to go to the studio to look. Volume?...

Re: Looking for opinions on my mp3...

Good mix. The production sounds great. All the instruments sound good, too. I particularly like the bass guitar for some reason. The guitars are nice and wide. This sounds like programmed drums, which I don't care for, but at least the drum tones aren't crappy. The snare has a little more ring than ...
