My problem with Walter Sears' article up there is that it's all or nothing. "Either you're a brain surgeon or you're a hack. Either you're pro studio or you're a hack." I'm sorry, Mr. Sears never climbed up the learning curve himself? You know - when he was like us? Learning and working hard to get...

I think that a lot of you miss the point of Walter Sears essay. I don't think he was comparing the importance of brain surgery to recording, that would be foolish and Mr. Sear is not a foolish man. I think he was just trying to make a point and used what may be an outrageous topic to do it. There ar...

E-602 is the shit!!!! Use it all the time. Except maybe for some jazz sessions. When my first one got a little tired I went to replace it and heard so much about the Audix D-6. Returned it the next day and got another e602. 'nuff said.

I was quite lucky to find a pair of Dynaudio M1.5's at Guitar Center about a year ago. They were used but cosmetically perfect. Not a scrach. Picked them up for $1500 for the pair. Had a blown tweeter which Dynaudio replace in 2 days for $250. So all said and done I got me a sweet pair of mains for ...

I use the Tab-Funkenwerk bass DI. This thing sounds amazing. Takes care of 90% of my sound. For the other 10% I send out of the DI into a Fender Hot Rod Delux with some gain but not a ton of volume. Don't want to blow this amp, ya know... Mic up center cone straight on with a 57 and blend just until...

I've come to the conclusion a long time ago that advertising doesn't work. Word of mouth does. To encourage word of mouth I offer anyone that gets me a paying gig 10% of the recording budget of that gig. Refer me a band that books a $2000 session and you get $200 for doing nothing but saying "Steve ...

I have 2 of these pieces of dog shit. Never even plug them in anymore. They were just kind of sitting in my rack till I could add another Aphex 661 and another distresser. Good knows clients like to see full racks... Anyway, I got the Black Lion kit. Didn't really know what to expect but I figured f...

I like the idea of the whisper... might be something I will try myself. I've done somewhat of the same thing. Actually got the idea a while back listening to Metallica. Track his initial lead vocal then do a really tight double one octave lowwer. Add just enough of this second vocal take so it just ...
