I always felt I got a lot of use out of my soundelux U195. Front of kick, drum heart mic, guitar and bass amps, some limited vocals...lots of the stuff you mention. Even used it as a stage recording mic to great effect ( I used to do parallel mic setups for show recording for my buddy's band). It ha...

I had a cabinet I custom made for the studio for mic storage. Buncha drawers with compartments for the various mics in the arsenal. Each compartment had a thin foam bottom sheet, and thicker foam walls. Foam all covered by felt because it looked cool and kept things neater. the mics could nestle in ...

maybe a little more info? performer in a room with others, or in isolation? performer with other acoustic instruments or with loud guitars? vibes have big dynamic and frequency ranges, and a large area to cover. When in isolation in a room, I preferred at least 2 SDC spaced pair over the instrument,...

I have successfully used a fruit dehydrator as well, though it was a 1/4" reel, not 2". You need to transfer and archive your reels right away after the bake, too. The positive effects do NOT last forever, at least not for me, and I had that reel stored where my "good" 2" reels were stored after the...

check this old TOMB thread, which has a link to Geoff Tanner's site (Mr. Tanner being a former Neve employee and knowledge base for this kind of gear).

for a delay, you put the deck into record but monitor the repro side. You also monitor the input signal (like on another fader). The result is that you hear the input signal in time, and the recorded signal delayed by the distance between the record and repro heads devided by the tape speed. The onl...

one of the pieces that started paying for itself right away was an EMT 140. For a while I had 2 of them, one stereo and one mono. Prior to getting the plates, people would come to us to track basics, then they'd go hit their bedroom for OD and sometimes basic mix. Sometimes we'd get final mix work o...

Stedman N90 should fill your LD dynamic needs. Nice proximity effect and rolls the highs off a bit. Sorta "ribbon-like" response if you can believe that. You got a Senn MD409, so find the little siblings...MD402 - 408. I have a pair of 406's that are the most awesome tom and guitar cab mics I've eve...

just want to confirm for the board that, yes, I did build the 1176 clone on offer here (along with the one vvv has), and we did use them both for years at Clava Studio. Loved them, and so did the freelancers that worked our space. Glad they are finding new owners and getting used, 'cause I don't bui...

we generally listed a basic day rate for a fixed number of hours, and always had the caveat that booking larger blocks of time would result in an overall cheaper day rate. it was a lot easier to describe on a specific scenario, though. the explanation was always "1 day would be X. You want 3 days, t...
