Smile, drool, play piano in a sandbox

Smile would've been the Great American Album, but Brian couldn't keep the ideas together and battle the other Beach Boys and start a label and sue capitol and compete with the Beatles. I find it interesting that so many people cite a record that was never finished as evidence of BW's "genius". Hell...

Re: The Beatles vs. The Beach Boys

The Who or the Stones? Now THAT'S a topic! I work with a guy who's a die-hard Stones fan, while I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Who guy. We never actually argue about which one's better though, because to us, they're about even in terms of quality output vs latter day embarassment. It's just about which one...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.

Matthew Sweet's "100% Fun" is a monster- it pretty much put me on the road to compressor abuse. That, and Weezer's "Pinkerton". I'd give my left arm to be able to make a record as huge sounding as Kevin Salem's first two albums ("Soma City" and "Glimmer"). As much of cliche' as it may be, Led Zep I ...

Re: The "Friends" record collection

All I hear on "Back In The USA" is a band trying really, really hard to be something they're not. Not only did Landau utterly bollock the sound of the record, he encouraged them to be "professional"- short, concise songs, tighter playing, no personality at all. Compare the LP version of "Looking At ...

Re: The "Friends" record collection

I'm not trying to say the MC5 were like the Dave Clark 5, I just think everybody took them more seriously than they took themselves. Sure, they liked to smoke pot and didn't want to go die in Vietnam, but they were never hard-core Marxists, which a lot of people (like the cops) expected them to be. ...

Re: Best Dynamic Mics

All the usual suspects (most already mentioned), plus: EV RE-38 Kinda like an RE-20, with a whole lot of low-cut options. AT ATM-25 Great kick/bass instrument mic. EV RE-15 Similar to the RE10/11/16. More natural midrange than a 57. EV 666 Dosn't sound that great, but looks like Flash Gordon's ray g...

Stay alive with the MC5

MC5 a "political" band? Great, yes- "political"... well, just read "Please Kill Me". They were essentially the sons of factory workers who decided that being in a rock band was a hell of a lot more fun than working on the line making cars. I tend to agree with that, and they're one of my favorite ba...
