Re: Renovating a gutted house: what to consider?
Yowsa. Thank you for awesome responses. A few details here: We're applying for a HUD 203k mortgage, which has some advantages: - the loan includes a minimum of $5000 in renovations for required stuff like energy improvements (we're going to superinsulate, use tankless water heaters, get an attic fan...

Renovating a gutted house: what to consider?
On Friday I'm buying a house at auction on the cheap and will (if we get it) use at least part of the space for recording. The house I'm looking at has been more or less ripped apart. It's framed, but the plaster has been removed and we'll be drywalling. We (girlfriend + I, since we're going to live...

FS: 30 New Neutrik TT plugs
I bought 30 new Neutrik plugs off of Ebay, received them today, and they're not 1/4" as advertised. They're TRS TT plugs, which is really nice but not what I need. They're model NP3TT-P, new, unused, etc. They're really well made and look easy to solder in spite of their size. So, I'll take a $1 hit...

Re: Good Barebones PC w/o Audio
Buying a Dell often makes more sense, if you don't want to worry about conflicts. They do a pretty good job of making good, fairly vanilla PCs. I can't say the same about many other manufacturers. However, many PCs in the Dimension and Optiplex line have weak power supplies, which is OK for business...

Re: Cooling the studio during recording
http://oikos.com/esb/51/passivecooling.html http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhome/technical/fs15.htm Passive cooling might be harder to implement than buying an appliance, but it'll cost less in the long run. The big problem is that stuff that promotes airflow means putting holes in a room you might...

Re: Most strange, overthetop, kinky studio techniques known2
Robot voices: The song 'Flash RAM' by Brainiac has a speech unit from a TI99/4A doing the verse (maybe mentioned in back issue of TapeOp?). See also the Mighty MC Hawking Mics in strange places: I stuck a cardboard box over a guitar amp for a solo o/d it got a nice, hollow sound. We've used speakers...

Re: someone please use this band name:
Did I spell urethra wrong? Never looked it up, just thought it was funny... Well, when I read that I thought "HI-larious!" because urea is the name for the waste product filtered out by the kidneys, and the urethra is the tube. I've kicked around Urethra Franklin for years. Great Minds and mine thi...

Re: someone please use this band name:
Ureathra Franklin I don't know why this isn't Urethra Franklin. Uriah Franklin, Uriah Heaves. Columbus OH had Granny's Hole for awhile, with music matching the immaturity of the name. Members went on to the Hairy Patt Band and Eric's Mother, and the bass player killed a guy. Jason Drenik is the onl...

Tascam 38 manual and/or remote pinout
Hi, I'm gonna wire my own remote for my tascam 38. Has anybody got a pinout on the remote connector? Also, I've never aligned or set bias on one. Anybody know where the controls are located (before I rip the thing apart looking)? If you've got a 38 manual you'd be willing to scan or sell me, let me ...

Re: Best soundtrack ever
What about: Michael Kamen's soundtrack to Brazil, based around the Ary Baroso song. It didn't push any serious new ground, but I think it serves its purpose perfectly. Maybe I missed the post, but it looks like no one mentioned Angelo Badalamenti: most of David Lynch's stuff. I find his stuff really...

WTB: 10" 1/2 NAB reels, 1/4 TS & TRS plugs, broken
I've got a 1/2 tape machine now with NAB hubs and no reels. I need a pair. Also, I'm making snakes out of some really nice network cabling, but I need 1/4" TS and TRS ends. If you've got some broken guitar cables with decent (non-plastic) ends or just have a box of plugs lying around, I'd like to ge...

Re: drumkit overheads
I like AT Pro37Rs. I've got a pair and have been happy with a single overhead and another out in front of the kit a little higher than the top of the highest cymbal. They're good on guitar amps and at smoothing out brittle-sounding stuff, too, so if you don't have a lot of money you'll be able to do...

Re: 1/2" mainframe data tape
Dave, You're absolutely right. I should've qualified my first post a little, something like this: "given that a poorly biased and aligned machine will sound like hell on anything, do you think..." I don't have a manual for the 38, so I need to figure out where to make adjustments. I also need to fig...

1/2" mainframe data tape
Hi. I've been reluctant to ask this question because I'm worried that it's something EVERYONE but me knows, but... I just got a Tascam 38 and have to give up my 1/4" 8track at home. I've noticed that 1/2 tape is, well, significantly more expensive than 1/4. I have a huge supply, however, of 1/2 main...
