I'm recording a jazz quintet next month, tenor/piano/upright bass/drums/congas, in a pretty small performance space. The stage is tiny, and the bass player will probably not be using any amplification. There's no real way to set up any gobos either, the players will pretty much be jammed together o...

So.......I'm still in the dark. I rarely use compression and I try to make the loudest part of my track as loud as it can be before setting off the red. Is that wrong? Also, I have noticed that when I have a session with all of my tracks, and a mater fader at the end, I need to use a stereo limiter...

Most of that stuff is dubbed in using other sound samples. I saw a tv program describing how they do this, but it was probably 10 years ago.

I only wish they would include SMUX optical I/O. why? its only 2 channels. I guess if you're using an interface that only has ADAT optical as a digital i/o, and no spdif or aes i/o, this would be handy. Actually, I'm using a Presonus FireStudio which has ADAT optical in addition to the analog input...

Any compatible Laptops for Presonus FireStudio?

What PC laptop do you have that works pretty much right out of the box with your Presonus FireStudio? I'll be shopping pretty soon for one to make my portable rig complete.

The plug shouldn't go into the firewire jack unless you really push it. Part of the "fit" problem is due to the undersize firewire cable connector that you have (typical of most budget firewire cables) and the slightly oversize Firepod firewire jack...creating a loose fit. I use a good quality fire...

Frontier Design Dakota will work great for this. 16 channels of lightpipe in/out on a single PCI card. I had one and it works really well. There's a used one on eBay right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/Frontier-Design-Dakota-24-Bit-ADAT-Lightpipe-PCI-Card_W0QQitemZ230209969303QQihZ013QQcategoryZ41784QQss...

"Gawd, I hate it when a Bluegrass band insists on using a single mic for recording! And I'm a Bluegrass musician!!" Well, on the other end of the spectrum, I "hate" it when a bluegrass band insists on doing each instrument and vocal seperately until they are "perfect"... Which seems to be the norm ...

Gawd, I hate it when a Bluegrass band insists on using a single mic for recording! And I'm a Bluegrass musician!! Maybe that explains why I see so many Bluegrass people with only one ear...? Nothing wrong with mono - some of my favourite recordings are mono (some people prefer the mono vers...

I found packages of mini bungee cords in a local auto parts store. They're a little heavier than most stock shock mount cords, but they work just fine. I actually made afew shock mounts of my own with these cords.

I have the RSM-4. Michael Joly modded mine and it sounds pretty good for a cheap ribbon mic, but not earth shattering. It's dark sounding, but still offers a little high end after Michael removed the layers of mesh. I use it on violin/fiddle with great results. Works on banjo too.
