Nick, all very good points. I have, in fact, done the walk-around-the-room-hitting-the-floor-tom thing. I definitely found the best spot for my the tubs that way. I think what I neglected to do was the whole pink noise mode/node mapping. I did some half-assed calculations on the back of a napkin so ...

Recording a band separately vs all together (same room)
I'm interested to know what you guys think about recording bands separately versus all together in the same room. Personally, I feel there are pretty big pros and cons on both sides. So far, it has been my experience that I get a much better performance--and that's where the magic is--when recording...

Meris 440 (500 series pre & hi-z fx loop)
Holy cow! Anybody used one of these yet? http://www.meris.us/products/440-mic-preamp/ Currently, I love using my Keymaster for adding guitar pedal effects when mixing. Having a guitar pedal fx loop included within a sweet pre would make it so much simpler. I just love mixing through guitar pedals fo...

Also, I like to select a region larger than the song, and put the DAW into loop play. Give me about 2-3 seconds before the first note, and a longer ending, to listen to fadeouts / reverb tails / etc. at the end of the song. As each pass happens, I work on a different instrument or section. VERY IMP...

Or there is this, but I am kind of unclear how 16 channels have inserts on one DB25? http://vintageking.com/recording-gear/consoles-mixers/summing-line-mixers/neve-8816-summing-mixer I'm in a similar boat. I think that 8816 fits the bill. 16 channels, small footprint, DB-25. And to answer your ques...

What's your automation workflow?
Currently, I use an APC40 with Ableton to record automation. It's not great but it gets the job done. I was considering switching to Pro Tools and a Neve 8816 summing package but I'm unsure how I'd handle automation afterwards. Curious what you guys do...

What's your method for auditioning sounds?
I don't have a control room (yet) so I wear a pair of sound isolating headphones (DT770m) and hold up a mic to the source and move it around until I find a sweet spot. Other times I'll set up a mic in a proven configuration, record a sample and play it back (adjust & repeat as needed). I suppose the...
