I've looked into the 31-1989 7-band as well, and it uses inductors only for the mid and high bands, whereas the lower bands are opamp/gyrator-based circuitry. Also, I think that model is essentially an op amp signal path that runs on +/- 15-volt power supply, whereas models like the 31-1987 are all ...

Hi! I've got a six-space rack with a 238, a Rane SM82 line mixer, a Neutrik patchbay, and for the moment an Art Dual MP. It's all patched together to work like a PortaStudio of sorts, with the 238 outs normalled to the mixer ins, and so forth. I recommend the SM82 for flexibility, low noise, and neu...

The Beatles could definitely nail "Money," and IMHO (dare I say it?) even add something to the original. . . . It's not only fun to daydream about something like that, but also possibly a great creative tool. I imagine that kind of thinking being useful for helping define new and maybe elusive music...

Re: Cheap super gooey stereo flanger?

Hey all! I have an old MXR flanger/doubler which I love, but am trying to find a low budget hardware stereo flanger that can get super gooey (for lack of a better word) I've got a line on an old spx 90 (know it works, but noisy), boss se 50,and an old lexicon lxp-5. I owned a lxp1 and 5,and loved the...

Again, many many thanks for all your advice, insight, and patience! You're quite welcome. And I want to turn around and thank you for the way you approached this - Well, I try not to waste people's time, especially when I've asked for their help. Though it does seem to get harder and harder to keep...

First, thank you Mr. Scum for the nice run-down of troubleshooting AC and magnetic field problems. Always useful to keep all this in mind. Second, thanks for having a look at the schemo, but I should have mentioned that only the input section is similar to my unit. Apparently I have a sort of in-bet...

If there's nothing on the inputs, then they're just antennas hanging out there. It's not a particularly useful test case, and the preamp would never actually be deployed that way. Right. Noisy or dead quiet wouldn't matter in that case since there's no reason to record it with nothing plugged in. :...

On the 'scope test, I had nothing connected to the input. But the noise was evident during just listening with a mic or line signal plugged in--that's where I first noticed it.

Should I ground the inputs to do the 'scoping, or?

Thanks for your help.

Okay, 'scope report: No extraordinary garbage on the PS lines with either chip in place, regardless of input gain settings. However, I can see when and where the noise is kicking in at pin 6, the output. For the 2017, noise becomes slightly visible at about +50dB, clearly visible (though not unreaso...

I would check the power input pins 7 and 4 with a scope. If you see ripple (lines not wine) the power supply is getting pulled to hard or lacks sufficiant regulation/filtering. Thanks for your reply Jim--I was quietly hoping you'd help me out here. I'll scope the PS rails for thunderbird . . .er . ...

SSM2017 Swapped For SSM2019 Hums

Hi Friends, I've got an older DBX 286A Project 1 mic preamp in which I've changed out the the preamp chip from an SSM2017 to an SSM2019. The problem is, the 2019 chip causes the unit to hum audibly. Sounds like 60Hz. I was under the impression the 2019 chip was a plug & play replacement for the 2017...

I once posted on a newsgroup a similar question about "phase" and got a verbal drubbing the likes of which I will never forget: the proper terminology for the topic at hand is POLARITY. The term "phase" as applied in the OP's question is a popular misnomer, and should be systematically corrected by ...

Hey, Just give Peavey a call. Unless they've changed their policies recently, they'll send you whatever you need. Every time I've called for documentation, they have not only sent it at no charge, they also sent me original manuals/schematics, not photo copies, including those for the VMP-2. For how...
