Although they are more expensive than many others mentioned, Carr amps are great. The Mercury is switchable from 10 Watts (pretty loud) down to 1/10 Watt (bedroom volume). The Rambler is fantastic too.

Yep. It's all about planning ahead. Make marks to indicate where the studs are (so you avoid hitting them with the screws) and mark where the RC is (so you DO hit them with the screws).

I'm a logical guy so I enjoyed building my iso booth but it took nearly 6 months of my free time.

You can get an adaptor cable made for cheap. It doesn't make sense to choose a DAC based on a connector type. Redco.com can make a high quality cable for you. If you'll just need 44.1, 16bit you'll have the choice of lots of older pro convertors. I'd start with apogee and lucid stuff. See what Lavre...

Try plugging in direct. Can't get any quieter than that. And as long as you set the gain correctly it will be mighty clean.

I saw the Violent Femmes a bunch of times when I was a kid (they were from Milwaukee, I was living in Madison). The drummer used a huge metal pail turned upside down over his floor tom on some songs. I don't remember a trashcan lid but he probably used all sorts of stuff. House of Freaks was a great...

Replacement would likely mean replacement with another Ward Beck. They aren't going to buy you a vintage API. Nice thought though. i've never dealt with insurance for gear at all before, and it's something i've been looking into, but i was under the assumption that they give you the money and you r...

For piece of mind get your console appraised by a reputable dealer and consider itemizing expensive pieces of gear on your policy. Putting them on a rider.

Definitely keep us... well, posted I guess.

I'm loving this. I also have a deep affection for abused guitars.

I nurtured a '47 J45 that was bound for the dumpster back to health. Wish I had done a post on that process.

Best of luck with this one. I can't wait to see the next steps.

just got a '65 Gibson LG-0 acoustic from Elderly Instruments. It will need the plastic bridge replaced and some other work. I had been looking around for a knock around acoustic. My others are. '47 J45 and an early 30's HG-22 and they are too nice to take anywhere. This one I won't worry about as m...

I have a joly modded Octava 219 (lg diaphram) and think his work is great.

To me the answer is simple:
Get your mics modded.

Done.
