4 Track Cassette compatibility
I have a solid old Fostex 280 that I love... 4 bands of eq per channel and individual tape outs for each channel to dump to the computer. However, I'm worried about running the motor down. I'm about to start a new project and was thinking about getting a brand spanking new Tascam 414mkII and was try...

Re: Modern Computer Cassette Tape Deck...
It'd be a lot cooler if you could save MP3's to CASSETTE... that would be groundbreaking.

Re: Professional Mastering of Homerecordings
The Boss's "Nebraska" is a great example of what how a four-track can shine with a little pro mastering... though I think Ludwig at Masterdisk may be a little out of your price range. Has TapeOp or anybody done an article on Nebraska? I'd love to learn a little more about how it was recorded, what m...

Re: Justifying lots of money going into one thing.
Oh, and don't forget about blackface Bassmans and Bandmaster heads... they're usually ALOT cheaper than combos of the same era and you can always scrounge up some cabinet to run them through. I had a 66' Bassman head that I got for $125 that sounded AWESOME... 50 watts like the Pro.

Re: Justifying lots of money going into one thing.
Good God, is that what Pro Reverbs go for now? It's one of the better Fender combos, but that's alot of money... is it blackface at least (Not that it matters sonically)?... I bought my '69 Deluxe Reverb years ago for $200.00 - by far the best musical purchase I've ever, one of the best sounding amp...

Re: Wondering if anyone has used URPRESSING for vinyl
Since Alberit folded a couple years ago, United is pretty much the best place for 7" vinyl in the US. Outside of that, I think most gets outsourced to the Czech republic.

Marantz CDR300 anyone?
I've been contemplating purchasing one of these and I wondered if anyone's had any experience... I've always like the Marantz portable products (even the mono cassette recorders hold their value), it has XLR and phantom power, and I like the idea of being able to drop a CD right into the computer fo...

Re: recording with 2 mics
I just did this recently in a practice space with great results. Not the best gear: two unmatched Marshall mics (yes, the 2001 and 603S set) into a M-Audio DMP3 preamp and then an old Sony DAT deck. We put the two PA wedge monitors on a guitar case in front of the kick drum, then put the mics on a s...

Re: Gibson acoustic gtr challenge!!
If you have 3K to spare on an acoustic, you're in a great position and will probably get a really good guitar... But the rest of us? For the money, I think 60's pre-japan Epiphones are really amazing and sound lovely. If you want to do Drake type fingerpicking, you'll probably get a smaller, tighter...

Re: why are low-watt guitar amps better for recording?
Be careful pulling tubes out of an amp without rebiasing. From the sound of the bands you listed, you probably want some kind of british powered amp. I think Hiwatt makes used to make a small wattage combo. I have a '70 Fender Deluxe Reverb that's only like 18 watts, but it's still really fucking lo...

Silk & Steel Acoustic Strings
Anybody do any recording with Silk & Steel acoustic strings? They seem to be pretty obscure these days, but listening to alot of classic acoustic records (Bert Jansch for one, Jackson Frank another), I'm convinced that alot of players used these strings years ago. They have a light snap to them, and...

Re: Homemade Lofi Drums, any ideas?
I've heard a pretty convincing kick drum sound by close-miking a fat phone book - yellow pages are sonically superior. "When The Levee Breaks" was all phone books, I've been told.

A dumb question about DAT machines...
I've borrowed an ancient Sony DAT deck to use for direct stereo recording, but what about this switchable sampling rate: I think it's 48kHz or 44.1Khz. What does this mean and which should I choose if I'm recording a live band with two mikes and then burning CD's?

cleaning / degaussing a DAT recorder
I have borrowed an older Tascam rackmount DAT recorder to use for direct to two-track stereo recording. I feel confident enough about opening up the front to clean the heads, but is there anything to be extra careful about with using a degausser? Something I can touch and destroy irrepairably in a s...
