The DC Studio (not washington)

One of the concepts we had when designing the Grove Studio involved reducing noise and hum by eliminating all AC mains voltage from the control room itself. All the gear in the studio ultimately runs off of DC power. Some have internal transformers, others have wall-warts, but the all convert the AC...

I don't think having a different set of monitors at the computer position is such a bad thing. Many people like to switch between different sets of monitors to get a different perspective on this mix. This pretty much forces you to do that every once in a while. You could look into a VGA projector. ...

i don't have one of these, but the threads interest me. Would it be possible to somehow position the record head so that it directly drives the playback head?

frankly, you'll probably get better results replacing the speaker with anything but a Peavy. It is most likely your horn driver. If the woofer was blown, you'd have the opposite problem. The sound would be very thin and nasty with no meat or bottom end. Peavy cabinets are designed to be easy to main...

i'm telling you that infinite control of the volume of all the instruments will help in a live situation as much as if no more than a recording environment. (and yeah, I know you're not really going to do it) With the "V" solution, you can practically set the overall mix at home and just adjust mast...

Will, consider this your invitation to the Partnership for a Drum Free Amerika. lg never did mention whether he was in fact the drummer. My suggestion to help with both the recording and the live mix/dynamics is three V-amps, a Bass V-amp (or two, the farfisa might do better with this) and a good se...

the question i had, is can you run the individual tracks of each subgroup out to the mixer and record "stems" back to the recorder, then sum those stems through the mixer for the final mix. Would the extra conversions cause more trouble than mixing it all ITB?

Mixing is like acid-trips and sex - they should be done with people (or speakers) you know and trust, in an enviroment you feel comfortable and safe. Nobody ever mentions it, but you can get closer (if you can't afford better speakers and a lot of acoustic treatment) with a stereo EQ before your mon...

I'm no expert in electronics, though a do lurk a couple forums like the one at diystompboxes.com I'll tell you what I'm pretty sure I know. First, it's likely the input impedance of the device is quite a bit too low for the comfort of your guitar pickups. In order to get a good signal and save your ...

Screw the drummer every chance you get.

I'd imagine any elements you intend to keep low in the mix anyway. Degredation of quality wouldn't be quite so noticeable.

What are you mixing to? Any chance you could do your subgroups through the outboard mixer first?

I can't say I've ever done what you're talking about per se. I have done a lot of layering of reverbs, but usually there's a verb on a single track or a sub-group to create some sort of effect. Then I'll have a "master verb" across the whole mix to make it feel a little more like everything is in th...

how 'bout record a new track of just hi-hat, or some other percussion to augment what's there? Sounds like a great chance to practice your tambourine chops!

I'll EQ to tape if I feel the need. I don't feel dirty or bad about it when I do. EQ is a different choice from changing or moving a mic. It's a different choice from adding compression. It's among the tools I have at my fingertips while I'm making records. Nothing more nothing less. That, I can ag...
