2015 Mac Options

I'm considering a new computer purchase this year and would definitely stick with a Mac / Pro Tools combo (I don't want to start a never-ending Mac vs PC debate!). I understand it's possible to custom build a more powerful PC for less and that Macs are relatively overpriced, pre-optimized machines f...

I have the Avantone CK-40, I love it, use it every session as the room mic, and also as the main piano mic. No noise. Man, I'm really considering one of those... So far it's the best Blumlein/MS/XY capable mic I can seem to find for 1k or less. A pair of 414s would be nice, but they cost 3.5x more....

That'd definitely be a cool toy to have! Eric Valentine beat everyone to the punch though? Starting at 0:50.

On a side note, he's an effing genius? Great sounds.

Maybe it's just me, but I've always found the SSL gates to be really difficult to dial in and I'll basically use any other option first. Honestly, the default Pro Tools expander/gate plug-in works for me every time. There's not a keyed/triggered input setting that I'm aware of, but have you tried ac...

When you guys say in reverse, do you mean line level out, into the passive DI output with the DI input running into the amp?

I'm definitely not experienced with soldering, so maybe the DIY kit would be good for getting some practice as well as a nice reamping device. Thanks for the heads up!

I finally decided I had to understand the whole 414 product line and I found this, which has now made everything clear to me: http://www.trustmeimascientist.com/2011/09/05/curing-condenser-confusion-an-audio-history-of-the-akg-c-414/ Hopefully it helps others as well. Fantastic article. I couldn't ...

http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/tag/blumlein Holy eff, that's a beautiful line-up. DAYUM. Let the research / gear lust begin... Thanks man! David - do you (and/or popular opinion) recommend any particular version of the 414 over the others? Also, does anyone have any opinions on the AT4047 fo...

Thanks for confirming my doubts about ribbon mics for this purpose! You're right about the try before you buy approach... I suppose the best way to decide is to actually hear them back to back. It's just surprising that there are no currently available Blumlein-capable stereo condensers in the 1-2k ...

You may have better luck and more options looking for a stereo pair. Right, the possibilities with pairing two individual mics (same models or two different ones for MS) are basically endless. That is what I've done up until this point, and it certainly works well enough, but I'd specifically like ...

Stereo Microphones

Looking for stereo microphone suggestions. An exceptionally low noise floor is an absolute must, as the main use would be for distant placements on relatively quiet sources. Think subdued acoustic instruments next to an open window letting in bird chirps and distant traffic. Flexibility and price ra...

Hey man, you gotta do what you gotta do! There are those parts of the process that are the least fun / least rock n' roll things ever, but it takes the end result to that next level. Sounds great, man!

at one point i was like fuck it, just go play the damn thing again....and it's not like the original performance is anything great, but when i tried to redo it, it was just immediately apparent that.....no. it sounded like a bad cover version. the original had the enthusiasm, so i had to make it wo...

the drums....it's all just compressed room mics. tracks 2 and 5 were done out in my living room, which is big. the room mics are probably about 80% of the drum sound. just enough kick and overhead in there for definition and attack. drums on 3 and 4 were done in the mastering studio, just kick and ...

Man, I love it! Forgive me if I'm way off, but I'm hearing some Radiohead (but less uptight), some Godspeed You! Black Emperor (but more funky and sonically tighter), some Air (but less French), and maybe some RJD2 (but less sampled/pasted). I really dig the organic trip-hop vibe and could definitel...
