Time may prove me wrong, but I worked at a label and was on tour alot at that time - in both the US and UK - and the sense of change was palpable. I didn't say it's the greatest debut since GNR, but that album effectively buried the big 90's rock sound, and all the knucklehead rap-rock outfits sudde...

Yeah, after I wrote that I remembered the Stone Roses first - but I'd say arguably the most important American debut album is accurate.

Yeah, that post is seriously sour-grape flavored. Nobody knows why some records hit and most don't, but the Strokes debut was probably the most important debut album since Appetite for Destruction. ("Nevermind" was not a debut.) And the songs were pretty catchy, by and large. (PS and the Makers' boa...

Has she playing out much? Doing some touring? In my experience, most reputable booking agents are only interested in acts that are doing a bunch of touring already - if the act gets paid, the agent gets paid - but if she has a huge buzz around her, she might get offers from agents who want to repres...

I'll second the DMP-3. I've had one for a couple years and it's a great little box for the price.... it has enough gain for ribbon mics, you can use it as a DI box, and it has phase reversal, low cut, hi/lo gain button, and phantom power - just about all you need.

This thread is reminding me of that Aberfeldy album that was recorded with one mic, mono, no overdubs... listen to the song "Love is an Arrow."

That video just shows a rehearsal, or maybe a demo recording - the actual song was recorded in the pool cabana in Los Angeles. In the VH-1 documentary (available on DVD), John Simon talks about how they went so far to commit to effects while recording - i.e. tracking with reverb - to get a better se...

It ain't making records that's the big villain - it's touring!! Or all the trucks required to make a film. I read somewhere that Brightblack Morning Light were buying carbon offsets to relieve their guilt about touring in a massive 8 cyl. van -- an Willie's got his bio-diesel bus. But I don't see ho...

Yes, I bought a brick of the 472 a year or so ago... I'm not too worried about it going bad, though. Should I be?

I have no ear for speakers... I use Eminence almost exclusively and they sound fantastic at $39 bucks a pop. Old Fender amps came with cheap production speakers, so I use the modern equivalent.

The Sound Well in Berkeley would almost definitely have a stylus.

Is it belt-driven, or wheel driven? If the latter, sometimes the wheel builds up gunk and needs to be cleaned. My Garrard needs to have this done, it's a little sluggish. You might just replace the belt.

The FRAP is probably the best of all time, but good luck finding one:

Seriously, I thought it was a joke, but it's clearly for real. My favorite: "other microphones of unknown brand name or bring your favorite..."

SUBWAY! The place is legendary, but it's kind of a mess. They had moved to a larger location for awhile where you could actually see all the instruments, but then moved back to their old location which is about the size a mid-sized Uhaul. Everything is just packed in there and it's kind of hard to l...
