Sorry about the title! I ran across this early on in another board and Victor didn't have anything up on this board - no ill intent. I have paid and am hoping this thing goes through.

Give me an approved title and I will request a title change that hopefully will take effect.

Know anything about this group buy?

Cascade type stereo ribbon mic. The guy got booted from Gearslutz but is still carrying on with the deal. I suggested that he post over here, though I'm not sure if that's kosher. I wouldn't mind hearing opinions of TapeOpers.

This is an old thread, but.... ahem.... does anyone know where I can currently pick up a copy of the Dorsey article or the recipe for the mod?

Recording mag is out of the Sept 2003 issue and the other link listed on this thread has expired.

All of my portable mic cables tend to be quad with braided shielding - Mogame, Canares, or Redco.

If you are looking at bulk Canares you might look at the Redco site - I think they might be a bit lower than MarkerTec, but maybe it's the other way around....

Buy a Hamptone tube kit and build the sucker yourself! It will cost more than your listed price range ($700 or so) but will be unbelievably better than anything you may find within your stated range.

Check download site for info on sample delay and its solution.

BTW - My fave impulse - Volkswagen Bus, forgot where I found it.

Fokke van Sanne has a Mercedes Van impulse on his site, I'm not sure if I spelled his name correctly, but search engines are probably used to that!

It never hurts to know what the hell you're doing, and many good musicians do. I think you are confusing musicology with theory. We wouldn't have the Smithsonian Recordings if it weren't for musicolgy, which is more the study of music history and it's place in the culture of it's day. What influence...

Chinese factory instruments are great for beginners. There are up and coming 'Cremona trained' master makers in China who offer great value for more advanced players as well.

19th century German 'factory fiddles' are quite popular and good, but of course, cost a bit more than new factory fiddles.

I agree that set up makes a big difference and that a beginner doesn't need an artist quality instrument - $10,000 would be a ridiculous amount to spend.

You might try renting with the option to buy. Rentals will usually not be good instruments though... A half way decent bow will cost significantly more than most of the cellos suggested in this thread. Cellos are expensive. Professor's comment is probably accurate, though you can get a decent studen...

Some say the lollipop Cascade Ribbons are o.k. as well..... about $150 apiece. I'm not sure how they compare but the shape is interesting.

Vintage is what wine snobs talk about. I hope you don't have anything against good wine! Good wine requires good soil, good climate, good grapes, good handling, picking at the right time.... that's before the actual 'wine' is even pressed and fermented! There's a lot to it... styles and techniques ...

If you do any location recording you will need more cable length, of course.

If you read through cable listings (Redco, MarkerTek, etc) you will recommended usage for any given cable.
