Yeah. Big room, few mics, heavy on the brass, woodwinds there just for color.

I assume you're talking about the Specialty recordings. I've often wondered the same thing myself. Long Tall Sally sounds more primitive than most of the other cuts; my guess is that it was recorded in a different studio from most of the other cuts. I believe that a lot of the Specialty recordings w...

Hmm. I second the 50s and 60s jazz records suggestion. Little Richard's original Specialty recordings, esp. "Slipping and Sliding". I think that's Earl Palmer on drums. Ray Charles's Atlantic recordings from 1955 to 1961 (also Earl Palmer, I think). Most anything by James Brown. Stax/Volt - Booker T...

Re: Ribbon help!

I've been listening to my Bing Crosby collection and the noise floor on the cd's is the same sound I'm hearing through the 74b. Bing would have used a 44 or 77, but the idea's the same. Is your room absolutely quiet? A lot of times there is white noise that we usually don't notice because it's alwa...

thanks for the replies! Does anyone know what a fair price is? If one is not working for $300, how much did it cost to fix? My friend is selling it, and neither of us have a clue, and want to make it fair for both of us. It works and looks fine, but we are thousands of miles apart, so I can't try i...

I bought a dozen, and they turned out to be truly great trading fodder over the years.... A DOZEN? Wow, you're a genius! I bought one on eBay a few years ago. I think I paid in the $300 range for it. Had to have it reribboned, dammit. But it sure is nice now. I also have the old M500 with the plast...

Well, it's usually the other instruments, especially bass and guitar, which set the snares to rattling. Isolate. If you can give everybody headphones and have them play with the phones on without screwing up their playing, put the amps in another room, or go direct with the bass. Or, try to construc...

I'd just stay with what you have. If you're happy with your mixes, and your Pioneer rig does what you need it to do, what's the problem? The amp you use really has much less to do with the sound you get than do the speakers. The other option would be to get a power amp and a preamp with enough optio...

It seems to me that getting the room sound of the organ when you are going to dub your vocals will make it sound like two different recordings pasted together - UNLESS you also record your vocals in the same way as the organ, which you probably don't want to do. Just my approach, but I would try to ...

Re: Roland

I've always loved the sound of the Roland KC amps series. I used to have a great KC-550; I got it used for $250, it had a lot of volume and a very accurate representation of my keyboard. Lots of good bass, 15 inch speaker, and it's got like 4 stereo inputs if you want to plug in a couple keyboards....
