Cassette deck question

I got a lovely 2-track cassette deck today at a yardsale for $5. Everything seems fine, sounds pretty good in a cassette kind of way. The only thing is the left channel plays back about 4 db lower than the right channel. Both channels record at the same level. What could be the problem, and what can...

IME, heads are like guitar strings, they need to be broken in a bit. When you press down on the head on the drum, it shouldn't make a crinkling sound.

If I understand correctly, the speaker cab is serving as a powersoak, so this setup is basically the same as a Weber MASS type deal, except with real speakers instad of power resistors. If the amp isn't smoking, it's probably fine.

A neat innovation in the true TapeOp spirit :)

I use GarageBand. It's pretty amazing for a program that's basically free. I would, however, like to move up to something more sophisticated eventually. Tune both heads to the same pitch, and don't cut a hoie in the resonant head. Make sure the drummer doesn't bury the beater. That should give you a huge boom.
