Re: Behringer XM8500

I would never have beleived a mic this inexpensive would be so great of a performer. This mic sells at Musicians Friend on special at 3 for 59 bucks. I bought two of them to suppliment my drum mics, and I was amazed to find out that it is a fantastic vocal mic as well. At one time I had an EV357, a...

Re: meterless tape calibration

I see what appears to be analog I/O behind the deck and audio electronics on the bottom of the front of the machine. Maybe the meter is just a meter bridge and nothing more. If so, it appears to be do-able, but an awful lot of work. I've seen machines with meters wired directly to the outputs. so m...

Re: meterless tape calibration

Dude, that's just a transport! Damn good one, but still. Total bummer though. Any older reel-to-reel machine or anything that isn't a Tascam (for the most part) is going to be a big investment in the long run. The last Studer A80 was made in 1979 and they're all maintenance hungry old beats at this ...

Ask Bob Olhsson if he doesn't reply to this. He is a member of this board right? And rec.audio.pro, REP at prosoundweb.com, the DUC, and probably some others too.

Bump. The thing's on ebay now. Maybe willing to accept less than originally asking. Haven't gotten a chance to check out that (supposedly) dead channel yet.

Re: Peopl on eBay are retarded...

I thought it was due to all the hype generated about ribbon microphones on internet discussion forums in recent years. Idiots on ebay think they can capitalize on it by finding all these old thrift store mics and passing them off as an RCA 77DX clone or something. [edited for spelling]

Re: what do you listen on -outside of the studio?

My 30dB isolation headpones (Peltor ear muffs with Sony 7506 drivers) never leave my side. I sometimes carry around a pair of AKG 240M too. For listening to CDs here in Hartford those just get plugged into my computer's CD-Rom drive or it's some generic computer speakers that my room mate has. MD pl...

Re: 499 or gp9

Larry just proved what my original instincts were telling me about the matter. http://home.flash.net/~mrltapes/pub644.pdf You want the three tone (100Hz, 1kHz, 10kHz), 15 ips, and since you're running 8 tracks on only 1/2" best to go with IEC1. That would be catalog #341-644-482-103 for $115. Standa...

Re: Wanted: Some ears...

I could use an extra bottom octave on the drums. It was the first thing that struck me. Or at least more of the lows that are there. Probably because you're really missing a bass instrument. Otherwise, nice song and the production fits it wonderfully!

Re: MIC REVIEW: Shure SM81

I second the thoughts posted above. Good SPL handling due to their pads and low sensativitiy. Can you say SMOOTH mids? (and overall response isn't bumpy) Lovely on piano, and a can't go wrong choice for overheads, room mics, acoustic, anything stereo. But while we're on the topic, anyone used the ne...

Re: 499 or gp9

Well, I guess I will go with a fresh reel of 456 till I can get the deck recalibrated if need be. You can learn to calibrate this deck yourself. Maybe not the head alignment, but definately the signal electronics. Much easier than you think. It's a bit of an investment, but more or less equivilent ...

Re: anyone using their sytek as DI

I aint shittin, those behringer ultra-DI active things really sound fabulous. That's great news! I've been fooling myself for years thinking the next piece of cheapo gear I buy won't suck only to disappointment and it's always a shining moment when things turn out otherwise. Thanks for the info, Aux.

Re: API Tracking

I'd like to offer this example of one of the finest sounding discs I've ever heard that was API tracked and mixed. A friend of mine engineered this and I remember when he first played me the unmastered mixes how awe inspiring the sound of the project was. Spooky and surreal. This was also done at K...

Re: 499 or gp9

By the way, 996 is a discontinued 3M/Scotch brand of tape, not Ampex. I don't know anything about it or how it compares to 456. If you want to use 456 and don't want to recalibrate, the only thing to do is go buy a reel, load it, and try it out. Record a good sounding CD onto a channel, quickly swit...

Re: MIC REVIEWS

This is f**king great. It really helps those of us without the motivation to go digging in the seach engine. Question: is it okay to add my opinions on some of these mics and bump up the posts even if the reviews are so old?
