Here's a little more info about this years' get-together, which will piggyback in some way with this event, put on by the Hotel Congress in Tucson. http://hocofest.com/ Still very scanty on details for the conference portion, but past TapeOp/Potluck panelists get into this years conference events fr...

(There is a bit of personal editorial in the following, but it comes with the blessings of conference director Craig Schumacher, who I talked to this morning.) Sad but true, the Potluck/TapeOp conference we've experienced the last 7 years won't make a return in 2009 in the form we've come to know an...

capn Your friend may be referring to using rigid insulation on top (to the exterior) of the existing sheathing (likely 1x6's or similar on a building that old), then putting new plywood over the insulation, then roofing. This would leave the old wood exposed on the inside, which is what you're after...

David A metal door is unlikely to be more soundproof than wood, since most metal doors are thin metal skins filled with rigid foam. The advantage of metal is that they are less prone to expanding and contracting than wood, and can keep the weatherstripping seal tight, which sounds like a weak link i...

jake The answer is dependent on your budget of course, but generally the least expensive option with reasonable performance is to use a pre-hung 1.75" solid core door without a lock cylinder bore in an exterior jamb, with either a mortised or surface mounted drop down seal on the bottom. The last on...

This one started out as a 3 car garage. I got to do the carpentry, and Wes Lachot did the design.

I don't think it will scale down exactly to your size, but you might find some useful ideas. Good luck.

D What are you trying to achieve with this product? More isolation? More mass is usually the best way to achieve that if you have framing that can support more. From the designer I know and have done construction for, any "floating" floor pad that is not calculated for weight (of the platform), load...

Zach How much is this stuff in 2" or 4" thickness, and which of the 3 on that web page you reference are you planning on? Is it really 1/3 the cost of OC 703 or 705? Your covering should be acoustically transparent (like speaker cloth) for your traps to function as designed. I would think canvas wou...

Dennis For soundproofing, think airtight; seal any penetrations (including electrical, HVAC, and at doors and windows), add an extra layer of drywall (skip the z-channel unless you peel it all back to the studs and use true resilient channel that will let the drywall "float") and an extra layer of w...

glu Have you played for any length of time in a space that small? Not being a horn player, I don't know, but it seems to me that no air exchange might make it tough, and you need a total seal to make it soundproof. Making sound"proof" baffling for air exchange is hard to do. Dont forget you need thi...

lewis Does this building have a suspended ceiling? Are there HVAC ducts coming in (or out) of the space? How about electric or phone outlets in the walls? These are all areas where you could get a lot of sound leaking out, so figure out a way to seal them before you decide on further improvements. G...
