If you're looking to buy online, here's pretty good deal - $149 for an AT-2020 large diaphragm condenser and an AT-2021 small diaphragm condenser. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Live/Sound/Microphones/Wireless?sku=270455 or http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT2041sp/ Sweetwater has alwa...

Lately my most used mics have been an RCA 74B ribbon and a Beyer M260. The 74B on vocals, sometimes blended with a U87 or another LD condenser on another channel, and the Beyer on guitar (usually a Tele into a Princeton), but I like the RCA on my guitar amp too. I can't stop using the RCA - I love i...

Yes, I'm using the tone knob - like Joel (who convinced me to make this buy after I PM'ed him), I'm using Tone settings 1, 2 and 3 for bass and 4, 5 and 6 for guitar and mono keys. I was using mostly my Drawmer 1960 for bass DI, and before I sold them, I was using my Telefunken V672s. But the U5 blo...

Damn. I've tended to go through phases with the classic country artists that I'm into at any given time - but I'm always into Buck Owens. When he and his musical partner Don Rich were on, man, were they on. If you've only heard "Tiger By the Tail" or "Act Naturally", also check out "Foolin' Around,"...

Avalon U5
Holy crap. I bought an Avalon U5 DI today. Recorded a couple of tracks with it. Now I want to go back and re-do all my bass tracks with it!!! Used it for tracking DI guitar alongside mic'ed tracks and for tracking synth parts too. Makes everything sound better, but on bass - damn. It used to take fo...

Thanks for the tips. Hamfests - good idea! My wife probably first will be excited that I want to take the family somewhere on a Saturday instead of working as usual - until she gets there! I have a couple of DMM's, including one decent one, but it doesn't measure capacitance, and with all the caps i...

Bench power supply and meter suggestions
I'm about to get serious and buy a dual DC bench power supply for working on building and repairing outboard gear. Looking for suggestions for specs on volt and amp ranges, and whether having a third 5V or 12V supply is worth any extra money. Also, if anyone knows a good surplus warehouse that sells...

Neumann CMV-571
Neumann CMV-571 -- Anyone familiar with this tube mic? An eBay seller in Germany had one listed (Item No. 7392052031). The listing ended today, but it didn't sell. Had a starting bid of $299 and a Buy It Now price of $499. Had a cable but no power supply. I have two Neumann power supplies looking fo...

I didn't think having bands play shows was a bad idea - just being realistic about the money possibilities for the bands, but I guess any band thinking about it would know about how much they could or couldn't make. I've played a few shows that were done in recording studios or other big art spaces ...

Molded ends guys. Small quad cable too. If you made these yourself, you'd be in the $8 to $9 range. True, but unless you find super cheap used or surplus plugs or you just really like soldering cables, Mr. Patchbay is the way to go. I don't have any affiliation, except as a satisfied customer. $10 ...

I've used those too, but instead of screwing that big screw into the wall/stud, I screwed the hook into a block made from some scrap 1x3, then mounted the block on the wall with 3" drywall screws at the top and bottom of the block. More secure, won't split the stud, doesn't mess up the drywall as ba...

Mr. Patchbay is the best place for all things patchbay:
http://home.flash.net/~motodata/patchbays/cables.html
Excellent 2-ft longframe patchcables for $10 each. 3-ft, 4-ft, and 6-ft cables are $12 each.
And tons of very helpful info on patchbays in general.
