Re: Recording Banjo

Funny 'hammertime' I found the sm7 to be my best friend when it comes to Banjo. I use it right behind the bridge on the drum, and used a GT66 on the strings in a very open room and I worked great. I was trying to use a SM57 on the bridge but it lacked the thud of the SM7. Just goes to show, ears are...

Do nearfield monitors wear out? And how?

I have been mixing with M-Audio BX8 for about two years now and I can't tell but I think there starting to get less responsive in the highs. I was looking to get another set of monitors for options(maybe NS-10's). But I'm wondering if maybe it's just time to replace my current speakers. There not bl...

Broken gear stories. How did it happen? How much did you cry?

I just lost my 12 year old AKG C1000S in the toliet while seting up a bathroom guitar track. I'm afraid to even test it. I have recorded so much with my now wet and stinky friend, I will miss you very much.

Re: What prod. techniques (that you do, or have done) just s

Thanks for playing along folks. This post was more of an experiment on the egotism of artists. The post that showed up last week on the most aggravating production cliques got about 35 hits. Why? Because it's much more fun to laugh at others than your self. So this was my reaction to that.

What prod. techniques (that you do, or have done) just suck?

Come on be honest, this is where we hummble ourselves for the enjoyment of others.

How much about mic matching is just hype?

I always thought that matching a stereo pair of mics would be crucial to and accurate field, but in recent months I have had more than on Sales Rep tell me that manufacturing has gotten to point where it has become unnecessary. For instance a shure rep that sells to my place of work, told me that th...

Re: When is your album done?

I always thought that it seems more natural to call it an EP if it has 6 or less tracks. If your album is 27 min and 10 Tracks I would call it an LP. I mean I can think of many LP's that are under 30 min. "Rubber Soul", "Pet Sounds", "Violent Femms" Etc. That is the one thing that i always notice ab...

Re: tascam 4 track, dead at age 7

The death of my first 4-Track was a heartbreak like nothing else. I was un-trusting of those newer more digital things, and didn't want to replace it. Now three years later and living in DAW land, I would laugh, dance and sing around the burned corpse of my computer, with no remorse. Aw, the good ol...

Re: Flaming Lips -Soft Bulletin Drums??

It's all about "The Spider bite Song" There must have been two different Kicks used. On the end of the drum pattern just when you thought that beat was over, a very low (maybe pitched down) kick with lots of verb appears. This kick hit alone made me want to be an engineer.

Re: What ever happened to "Indie" rock?

I agree, something strange has happened. About 2 Years ago I was first introduced to the indie-rock scene after 2 years of ska and reggae bands. I was playing and recording ska, but getting very board of the format. I had always listened to the music that started indie-rock, but never knew much abou...

Signal to Noise Ratio?

Now I understand the whole signal to noise ratio, but my question is how much noise is too much. I am trying to bring my noise floor down on my recordings so any new equipment I think about picking up, I check the noise ratio stats. I have found that some of the most expensive sought after gear can ...

Re: Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) a hitmaking pop star?

This is true, Bright Eyes has had a good amount of hype in recent days. But us industry types should see through that shit right? As far as the quaility of Mr. Oberst voice, I also found very hard to listen to in the begining. But after I really started to listen(because thats what we do at tapeop) ...
