I'll chime in. IMO, the MOTU and 002 clocks are equally crappy. It doesn't matter which MOTU unit you buy, they all have the exact same clock in them--even the older pre-DSP units. Also, the 002 and the old 896 are very similar. The 002 has better D/A, the 896 has better preamps, at least on paper a...

*man with gear at Matt's shop giggles quietly* The Nady mic preamp, right? I know you sent me an email; I have over 100 in my inbox that need to be answered...jeez. Anyway, this isn't about me... what's your opinion of 888/24 converters compared to 002 convertor Actually, the more I work with the A...

I can pretty much tell you more than you need to know about both the 002 and the MOTU units. In my opinion, the MOTU's have the better drivers (for Mac) and the best A/D section. The 002's A/D isn't bad, but it's on par with what MOTU was doing two or three years ago, it costs more, and you get less...

Hey all, I read somewhere that most preamps like to have thier gain set at around 75%. Hi Dave. I'm not sure I agree with that statement. I can see how one might apply that under certain design circumstances, but not as a blanket rule. Interesting that you liked the Aphex better than the True, thou...

I was curious so I fliped the phase on one track to see how completly one canceled the other out. That's kind of a good way to hear differences--kudos to you for your creativity. A variation of this is sometimes used as a basis to test for THD--mixing the input out of phase with output. It sounds t...

Re: tech question - Need help finding the correct pots

I would advise that you check for the presence of DC voltage on the pot in question before you replace it. A leaky coupling cap can cause the problem that you're experiencing, but replacing the pot itself won't clear it up.

Hey Steve.

Don't give that guy any more attention.

Then he'll go away.

Re: Hooray for a real gear designer

From what I have seen and heard, a tube circuit can be tuned to work without transformers, but it would be very hard to mass produce because you would have to very carefully match components and test and re-test each unit by hand. They must have come into a way to bypass the tolerance issue. No--th...

Re: Black Lion Site it back up and running

You can get the opamps directly from the manufacturer's websites--www.ti.com for the OPA2604, and www.analog.com for the OP275.

I don't offer the PDF for the Tube MP mod anymore. The information contained therein was sold to a certain manufacturer.

Re: Black Lion Site it back up and running

Well, I replaced that single red LED with a water clear BLUE ultra bright LED and WOW!! What a nice upgrade this is in terms of looks (if you're into that). This mod makes for much clearer readings on the meter and added some class to it as well. Hey...I like that idea. Do you mind if I add it to t...

Re: 1176/Distressor

I remember reading a thread over on The Lab forum about the Distressor's circuitry. One of the regular posters there had managed to trace out a schematic for the Distressor (all of the semiconductors in the Distressor have the labels erased). If I recall correctly, his claim was that the 1176 and th...

Re: LOUD 11-13hz generator?

Your problem lies in finding a speaker that will actually be able to conduct sub-sonic frequencies like this. You may well be able to find an amplifier whose AC capacity is 0hz on up, but a speaker is another story altogether.

Re: bellari mp105 pot replacements... puff? mr. pastry?

Hey-- The Clarostat pot is the only type I've experimented with here, largely due to the fact that it's a good potentiometer and it mounts in the existing design pretty easily. It is expensive, yes. Ultimately, I decided that its cost was a bit too expensive in this application. I'm afraid I don't h...

Re: The 3630 Alesis Mod Warning!

in a couple years when "unmodded 3630's" become de riguer I can't imagine these things ever becoming de riguer in their stock condition. This has got to be one of the most useless designs ever conceived by an audio company, and Numark Alesis should be sued for trying to foist this piece of useless ...
