I don't know much about your workflow or anything like that so maybe take this with a grain of salt, but: if I were you and I was going to be using this mixer strictly for recording and never as a live mixer, I'd pick something in the Midas Venice F series (well within your price range) over a Studi...

..I've heard that this product is not aging well - Apple keeps changing the iPad and Mackie hasn't been able to keep up. Yup. Plus (if I may be the negative voice here) it sounds like crap. We got one at a theater where I work sometimes - just A/Bing it with an Allen&Heath ZED-series 24-channel boa...

Canare makes a mini connector that's pretty damn durable. I dunno how its strain relief would be on such a thin cable, but after trying out a few different 1/8" connectors I'm not planning on buying anything but Canare's connector in future.

Piano destruction - with pictures and soundclips

So, awhile ago (before the piano was destroyed) I posted a thread asking for opinions on how best to do it . The piano has since been destroyed, and this is the result. First, a few pictures: http://www.wrencurtis.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10153903/100_0858.jpg http://www.wrencurtis.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10...

It's done! It was actually done last week. I'll talk about it in detail when I have a little more time, but for now: a few pictures! http://www.wrencurtis.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10153903/piano1.jpg http://www.wrencurtis.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/10153903/piano2.jpg http://www.wrencurtis.com/uploads/1/0/1/5/1...

Yeah, any cutting of strings would be done after the string is already really loose - I've been cut by snapping guitar strings before and I can only assume that a piano's strings are more dangerous. Excellent advice on disabling the dampers very early in the process - that's exactly the kind of idea...

I'm gonna record the destruction of a piano. Suggestions?

So, long story short: my mom has stored an old upright piano for a friend for many years. This piano has a cracked soundboard, or something - can't be fixed and won't hold a tune worth anything. It's gotten so bad over time that now, even right after being tuned, there are a couple keys that sound a...

DPA 4061s I bet you're going to love those. I was lucky enough to get a couple B&K mics with the power supply a while back and I use it A LOT. It sounds just like what I hear in the room, so if I can get things to sound good to my ears, I know exactly what I'll get on the track. One thing to try is...

Just got a pair of DPA 4061s a couple weeks ago - haven't had a chance to use them yet but I'm sure they'll come in very handy. But the really exciting thing happened earlier this week - I've become really good at accidentally finding misspelled things on ebay, and this was my best find yet: a pair ...

That orange pedal is a DOD FX55c - Supra Distortion. That blurry pedal looks like another Boss DD. And the mixer thingy in the middle is a Behringer mixer - a Xenyx 802.

Speaking of good dynamics: I now have a grand total of 3 Beyerdynamic M420's after picking up a pair for next-to-nothing on ebay. I already know I love them on tabla and toms and I'm curious about snare - haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

I have IK Multimedia Miroslav Phiharmonik (the full version) and I like it quite a bit. Its solo instruments definitely sound better than its ensembles and the samples are quite dry (and its built-in verb sucks), so definitely expect to add a crapton of verb to them if you want it to sound like a "r...
