I have this on the wall right behind my workspace: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3634/3327763912_a9bd0e5dc1.jpg It helps. Also: I've noticed that I'm lazier about cleanliness and making my workflow easier at home vs. in the workplace. Ever since I've made a conscious effort to remedy that, I've bee...

A&H ZED seconded. I'd recommend it over a MixWizard, and I'd recommend it HUGELY over any Mackie. I have no personal experience with that model of Soundcraft.

I just got one of these and attached 2 of my 3 Rane MS1b's to it (it could realistically have fit 3 side-by-side but I wanted one "loose" to throw in my backpack for when I don't want to lug an entire rack around). It's pretty fantastic - ultra-heavy-duty (I was expecting something much flimsier giv...

I keep a pair of these on my keychain at all times, and they come in handy multiple times a week. When you're mic'ing up a guitar amp or a drumkit, pop 'em in and you don't have to worry about the musician playing while your head is right there. Or if you're assisting someone who's proved to be the ...

I have a friend who runs a live sound company who bought a 16.4.2 the second they came out, then another one and a 24.4.2 when they first came out. He still uses 'em all the time, loves 'em. I've used them with him, as I work with him on occasion - I'm also currently using one for a play I'm co-desi...

I've had a Studiomaster Trilogy for quite awhile that I still really dig. It's definitely got a nice sound - it's a little "soft"-sounding and I feel like it lacks a little depth, but it has fantastic routing capabilities, mixing through it sounds (for your purposes) good but appropriately smear-y, ...

Click.

I'm trying to keep a pretty strict public journal of the work I do throughout this year, anyway. We'll see if I stick with it for any longer after that.

One live sound company I used to work for had all its cables colored a deep, navy blue. They also had a relatively esoteric mic selection, so it wasn't like there was a pile of 57s and 58s that could get mixed up with other people's stuff. That worked pretty well. A company I work for now uses a cer...

They take up a lot more space per patch point than a conventional patchbay. That's really the only drawback. That and you'll probably have to make it yourself unless you get lucky on ebay, but they're super-easy to put together: take a plastic rack blank or a strip of plywood, some XLR terminals, a ...

In Tape Op book #1, Dan Rathburn talks about sending bass through a crossover set to around 100-150Hz and processing the high and low differently. I co-opted that trick and found that subtly distorting the highs (usually via a superdistorted parallel send/aux and mixed in to taste) can really do won...
