Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!
Drummer Atma Anur used the same exact 1-mic placement for recording his drums when we both played in DH Peligro's solo band project in the late 1990's and I recorded a practice with my Tascam 4-track to learn the songs. I used a SM57 mic, it captured the entire kit well.

Re: Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?
In my mobile rig I have one with all stock preamps, which I prefer, but I recently bought one with J-Fet TL072's in preamps #3 & 4 that I need to try out on a session.

Re: Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?
The MPX4A & ii was manufactured in 4 versions: 4 ch of stock pres, 4 ch with Burr Brown (BB) IC's, 2 ch with stock and 2 with BB IC's in preamps 3 & 4 and one with 2 stock channels and 2 with J-Fet IC's in preamps 3 and 4. The BB and J-Fet IC's are less detailed and somewhat slower/rounder sounding ...

Re: Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?
The most amazing thing about these units is how quiet they are at high gain. The fact that Stoica refuses to provide schematics for the MPX4Aii is a bit problematic. I once bought one used with a non-working channel. I found a good repair location that found the issue and repaired it for a decent pr...

Re: Prodipe D12 copy???
Prodipe has no sales presence in the US. Their focus is in Europe. Any idea about what people are saying about them? Prodipe's initial microphone offering (TT1) received generally good reviews, especially at the price point. A decent review here: https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/prodipe-tt1 The...

I have 388 for some time and love it, but I never did overdubs on it, the manual is a bit confusing and whatever I try doesn't work so I would appreciate some help... So, let's say I have something recorded on track 1 and I want to overdub and record something else on top. What's the procedure? Tha...

...If you must have a 421, you'll just have to wait and get one. The current mkII models don't have a transformer, which is probably the main reason for the change in sound between original and new. People know what the older 421's are worth, you'll have to pay a premium to get one. Main problem wi...

Before you spend Microphone-Parts money for a MCA SP1 mod, try the simple mod kit for sale on ebay: search for "MCA SP1 ebay mic mod". Invest in a soldering iron & kit and try it. This mod only works on earlier versions with circuit boards with thru-hole parts. The newest MCA SP1's have SMT boards, ...

If you want to hear a good kick mic demo recording, check out TapeOp'er Jesse Gimbel's kick drum mic shootout here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki3UtgNR4C0 . I thought the Sennheiser e602 had a similar amount of treble snap like the 421, but a lot more low end. If you must have a 421, you'll jus...

Tubby Boots "The Emerald Captain" on bandcamp
Debut album from SoCal band Tubby Boots (tubbyboots.bandcamp.com). Extensive use of ribbon mics on drum overheads, guitars and vocals. Most tracks recorded to 2" tape, monitored thru computer and Logic (no console) and mixed ITB. Unique, organic but modern sound.

I understand the DIY aspect of it, but my main issue is sonics. Many people buy old Telex duplicators to run off their cassette copies but many of those are mono and top out at 10k, copies sound bad. Old used double cassette decks used to be plentiful at thrift stores but not anymore. Finding chrome...
