More definition to the question? The Altec 165 system is a tube mic. The Groove Tubes MD-1 is a tube mic. I have each. They're not alike. Nor are they like the Pelusos I've used or that one U47 someone brought to a session once... I really like the MD-1 for loud aggressive vocals. It can cut and fuz...

The machine takes 1" tape. Is it possible they named it wrongly? Yes. All MCI JH series I am aware of were 2" tape machines only... the JH-24 name was for the 24 track version. Anyone here see an MCI JH in 1" 8 track? there was also a 24 track JH-16...the difference between JH-16 and JH-24 is the e...

I've run my 1/2" Scully 280-4 both in the original cart (hubs mostly parallel to the floor) and in my rack (hubs perpendicular to the floor). Makes no difference on that machine. Yes to the other folks here, though. Maintenance, cleaning, and especially the simple act of threading the machine are wa...

the complication with running 280 amps without the transport is that the P/S output cable goes to the transport, then the big multi-conductor cables come from the transport to the channels. Clearly you know this if you've looked at the back of your deck. You should be able to dismount the P/S, find ...

Audioarts 4200 is nice. Has a great character and would work with the Pre amps etc.. Mike Yeah, these aren't bad at all. I have a single channel unit (the 2100, I think it is) that I'd sell for $125 tomorrow. also some of the Orban units (like the paragraphic ones) are cool if they are in good shap...

if you like it and can make good use of it and afford it, then yes buy it. That whole 40x series of Sennheiser mics is fantastic. I always bump the MD406 here, because I have a pair. Seriously awesome on guitar amps and toms, because of what the thing sounds like up close on a source.

I had one for my old M79. At least I know I had a Sound and Vision unit...not sure about the model number. I still have it. I used to have some documentation on it too, but I don't think there was much but an operating manual. Maybe I'll get a chance to stop by my storage space tomorrow and look. go...

Might be hard to get that real concert drum sound with a 22". Depends on the drum, I guess. Loose heads on a drum that small. Fiberskyn might be too dead. I'd probably opt for an Ambassador on the batter side. Maybe a pad. I'd probably try different reso heads 'till I got one that made the drum sing...

go ahead and pull them if you're worried, but note very carefully for buyers that tubes are removed and shipped separate. Some may not be comfortable putting them back in. Spelling it out before hand at least gives the winning bidder a chance to tell you to leave them in and they will take responsib...

Those are super nice modules in that thing. I have 2 channels of mic in, 4 of EQ (3 and 4 band) and the comps that are in this cute little desk. Always been real happy with them, especially the mic amps. The high pass filters on the mic ins are just the ticket for great snare sounds as far as I'm co...

Yeah, case by case, but usually studio. Our place is small and we don't do lots of business. We have lots of stuff that the studio doesn't OWN, but is on indefinite loan from old friends/clients for storage and for use by others. Generally, if it's on the floor and set up, it can be used. I understa...

And don't let that Hamilton name in front of Baldwin hold you back. We have the full upright version of this piano (I bet the soundboards are real close to the same). Older too (like around WWI according to our tech), and while ours is far more...used...than this one it still sounds pretty darn grea...

well, the dude (at any rate, it historically was a male) who makes barrels is a cooper. A traditional whiskey barrel is made nothing like a drum though, being made of shaped axial staves held by rings, rather than circumferential bent laminations. I don't know if traditional woodworking guilds had a...

For your question #2: this used to be the place when Quantegy was producing tape: http://www.malelo.com/ It looks like an old camera store from the street. It IS an old camera store. Do not be decieved, though. Back when there was demand for tape, this place sold it by the case to most of the big us...

One of the Califone guys (Ben the percussion player) has been a very close friend for almost 32 years now. I own the studio where they record, and if you've seen the Funeral Singers film, I own the home (built in 1863) where it was shot. Much of the story and the bare bones of some of the songs were...
