I have to agree with Blumlein as well. It's a great way to capture a source in stereo and still get the room in there as well. Won't work well in a bad room, obviously. Blumlein center with omni outriggers is my favorite setup for classical in a nice sounding hall - well, when a Decca Tree with outr...

As frequencies get higher, omni mics get more directional. This is true for all omnis, but how much this happens depends on the size of the capsule - a smaller capsule can have closer to a true omni response due to diffraction effects. There's more of an explanation here. ^^ This. Since it's more d...

I have a couple little oddball ones. No brands on them, so I can't say a whole lot more about them. One has a speaker that can't be even three inches (can't see it through the grill, and I haven't ever measured it, but its pretty damn small), that proclaims "Solid State" on the panel on top. It has ...

SM57 w the transformer gutted (the 'TapeOp' mod) - more forgiving on guitar cab placement. Good on bass cabs. Been meaning to try it on kick. GREAT on vocals. Put a pop screen in front of it, and its shockingly comparable to the SM7 - even more than I expected it to be. Felt cloud over my mix posit...

If combined with another mic, it can give you some nice bass, but that's about it. A LOT of people use them to trigger samples. Since its all bottom, and it takes a lot of energy to move it, nothing bleeds into it, so its a clean source for triggering. Maybe the sounds on it are all triggered kick s...

Man, I haven't done that in a LONG time. Best doghouse I've ever done was using a floor tom shell and some blankets. Gave the kick some room to breathe and wasn't completely dampened. If you dog house your kick (to kill bleed) it can hold up to levels of processing abuse most other drums can't. Then...

I need to play w the LDC in front thing more. Advice on the heart mic? I had one drummer recently who's playing is great - nice and balanced. Tuned beautifully, too. But in the mix, his kick sounds puny. If I mix it up enough to get it to cut through the excessive wall of guitars (dont' get me start...

I would LOVE to do that kind of a thing more, but sadly its not what people usually want. I can't always get my way with some of the bands I'm working with. My favorite drums I've ever recorded was a pair of omnis, kick and snare. 4 channels, simple. But I don't have that drummer or that kit any mor...

Kick drums

So, does anyone have any go-to kick drum setups they would care to share? I've usually gone with a dynamic of some kind, occasionally in the drum, sometimes only at the hole in the head. Done good stuff with a 57, an Audix f12, even a Beta52. My last couple sessions, I've had a drummer with a KILLER...

If it is Core Audio compatible that means that it will be plug-and-play in OSX. No driver installs required.

As to stability? All depends on the hardware.

I don't see anything wrong with having go-to setups for particular sounds. I think we all do that to a certain extent.

The best thing is to know what that gives you, and be willing to change it as necessary.

Explain what mastering is, and why its better to have someone else do it. That said, there are some people who still ask me to do it for them. So what do I do? I re-iterate to them why its better to have a specialist do it. I tell them why its valuable to have someone with a better (or sometimes sim...

Gun cases. Seriously, pistol cases are perfect for SDCs.. +1 Must be a Michigan thing! Go to the local big box and pick up a gun case. I've been eying the double rifle cases to house my whole collection in one unit, but I've been using a couple pistol and ammo cases for years. I picked it up from m...

Okay, so I used to have a similar issue with my G5 Powermac, and I found this: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20051110105729848 and several other threads elsewhere about it. CHUD Tools allow you to diable processor nap, which is what was causing it for me. Worth trying. I don't have Dev...

Gun cases. Seriously, pistol cases are perfect for SDCs.

Doing classical for the university, all our mics that didn't come with a case are in pistol cases.

Not terribly unlike this:

Throw them in the duffle with necessary cabling and go.
