Play with how your gate opens and closes, and it can sound anywhere from "surprisingly natural" to "808 strapped to your crotch".

Exactly. The only gripe I have about it is that I have to turn off processor sleep every time I turn on my computer. Not a huge deal, but kind of annoying.

Yo, I think there was a lot of discussion about this at the Digi/Avid boards a while back. A quick google search found this. Maybe try some others over there at the "DUC" http://duc.digidesign.com/archive/index.php/t-103699.html This was exactly the issue I had with my G5. Identical symptoms to wha...

Reading about stuff helps me articulate to myself what's going on, think it through, etc.. That's my favorite thing about having a housemate/studiomate. He and I get to sit in on each others sessions now and then, popping in and out of the control room when we're both around. We get to talk about a...

My studiomate pretty much always high-passes his overheads at like, 500Hz if I'm not mistaken. Obviously it will depend on the player and the kit, but he does that. He'll start with kick and snare (and maybe toms too, not sure his approach on those), and then bring the overheads up until they fill i...

To chime in on the high-hat micing portion of this thread: I've miced hats maybe three times ever. And I can tell you that only once have I really used it. Did it need it? Probably not. Probably would have sounded great either way with this good of a drummer. Was it better for having that mic in the...

Yeah, if they're that fussy, maybe they should own their own mics, but a more reasonable solution would be for them to ask for certain gear upfront, BEFORE they book a session. When they were booking, why didn't they say "So this is the mic we prefer for the violin, and this one for the flute... do ...

Hello Ian, Thank you very much for posting that sample. It does not sound anything like I expected based on my review of unprocessed choral samples made with u87s in ORTF-ish directly to a Marantz PMD560. Would you be willing to share with us any more details? I'm particularly curious of -- What pa...

where is the surplus store located? They're south of campus - used to be off Harrison south of Trowbridge, but they just moved out near the power plant. If you check here: http://www.msusurplusstore.com/servlet/Page?template=location they have a map and address. If you're in the area, its a cool tr...

My latest haul of used gear.

So I live near Michigan State University, and do some work for the college of music there. I'm an alum too, but that's neither here nor there right now. At MSU they have what they call the Surplus Store. Basically, anything and everything that the university needs to get rid of (that isn't trash) go...

...a pair of U87s is well beyond my means. How does one get a access to a couple of $3000 mics 1-2 years into their recording career? I've never even held a U87 much less thought about buying one. Final question - given my mic closet I'm thinking of doing a Deca tree arrangement with an LDC as the ...

What pattern / spacing were the u87s in? What type of processing (EQ especially) did you perform? How much are the 4006s mixed in? The U87s are, as you put it, ORTF-ish. I eyeball it, so its probably not too precise. Might not be quite 110?, and I think I probably usually set them apart more than t...

Ahh, typing this again, as the annoying malicious site warning ate it last time: As an example of the technique I'm talking about: http://michigansoundservices.com/media/misc/WhenIHearHerIHaveWings.mp3 I did this with U87s, about 14' above the conductor's head, and maybe 6-10' back from his podium. ...

I work for the Michigan State University College of Music, and for most classical and choral work, all I use is a pair of U-87s, ORTF. LDCs are probably the way to go, if you want my opinion. Start by having them run through some of the pieces. Nothing too strenuous - don't want to wear them out, bu...

One of my favorites is how in a lot of movies and TV when they need a bank of "technology" it is often just salvaged audio gear. You see a lot of 30 year old power amps. Huge gain knobs, maybe a VU meter, but apparently impressive enough looking to most people. I've seen spaceships and submarines pi...
