Thanks - the DPA link has some great papers on reading mic specs and understanding the physics of diaphragms.

website with stereo mic techniques explained
Just stumbled across this site, which explains several classic stereo mic configurations, including the obscure Blumlein Difference Technique (BDT):

Drum Editing, Pro Tools style
Who dares to tackle this shit-ridden subject? I hate drum editing, and I'd like to hear from people who've taken the plunge on a project and done it. I'm not talking about fixing a single missed hit, or splicing two great takes together because one had a stronger ending. That's the bright side of Pr...

Re: Using Dynamic Processors without Inserts
Yes, but if your compressor is unbalanced, make sure to stack the mic pre on top of it, and not vice versa. Otherwise the audio appears upside down.

Pro Audio stores in Portland (OR)
I've been under the false assumption that there were only two pro audio stores in Portland, namely SuperDigital and Brownell Sound. (And no, the "Pro Audio" department at Guitar Center doesn't count.) But I found a new one recently: Cascade Media. They're on SE 11th, just south of Powell, next to th...

Re: Kick Drum
Which pins do you connect up on the XLR from the speaker? I hooked up the postive speaker terminal to pin 2, and the negative to pin 3. I left the ground pin (1) disconnected. Perhaps you could tie ground to negative, and perhaps even it would be a good idea. What's your thought about the coxial ca...

Re: Kick Drum
DJSlayer mentioned it and I'll second it... use a PA speaker. I'll third it... I finally tried this, and it's all about the boom and nothing else. I'm using just an 8 ohm speaker, 12", from an old coffin-sized home stereo console. Nothing fancy at all. Wired direct to an XLR connector. Mounted on a...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
If you are into Tchad Blake, I think that record is by far the best thing he's done. Better, in your opinion, than Tchad's work on Tom Waits' "Bone Machine"? I haven't heard the Sheryl Crow record myself, but Bone Machine is my favorite record ever for texture. Of course, since texture is certainly...

Re: Baby's First RNP Thread
Yeah, I was thinking of just sticking the 3 pre's in a row in a single soundfile, with a "now turn the page"-style ding between each pre. Although you can certainly tell just by the sound when it changes...

Re: stapes vs. the ghetto army
i'd love a pair of stapes mics, but i feel like i've been waiting like a year for them to come out. and now they are going to be like $400-500 for a pair Are the Stapes even out yet? There's no ordering info on their site, and I can't find anyone else who carries them. I wasn't thrilled to hear abo...

Re: Baby's First RNP Thread
I'll post some aiff samples when I get a minute. I still use the M12's pre's when I have to (tracking more than 2 signals at a time), but I think I'd use the RNP whenever I could. I haven't done a ton of side-by-side comparisons with it yet, so it's possible I'd like the M12 better on some stuff. So...
