oh i just reread your post. flipping the top mic? eh, not so typical. you generally "need" to flip the microphone that's facing the opposite direction of the other mics. if you're micing every drum from the top at a similar angle, a bottom snare mic will be out of phase, almost 180 degrees. check yo...

it keeps the drummer snappy on thinly ripped current events.

i've never heard of it, personally, but i'd imagine the "rustling" sound it would make is probably what it's used for. i've tape a tambourine to the inside of the resonant head, but never used newspaper.
