If you don't already have one, you should get a multimeter (anybody who makes their own cables should have one, even a cheap one will do, it can save a lot of headaches). The resistance between the parts that should be connected (tip to tip, sleeve to sleeve) should be very low (less than 1 ohm). Th...

I have a fostex model 80, which is an earlier 1/4" 8-track machine, and it has a connector in the back to hook up a fostex synchronizer. If you could find one of those (I think it was a model 4030?), then you should be able to do it as drumsound describes.

When I was in high school, we performed this, and I remember they used a pistol (shooting blanks) fired into a large metal barrel. That seemed to work pretty well.

As I recall, the "Recording the Beatles" book described a little box the studio had to do this- they combined several drum mics together to go into one preamp channel. I believe it was a transformer-based device, but I don't have the book with me right now, so I'm not sure.

A few weeks ago, I recorded a band that was using one of those amps. The amp started making a low-level squealing noise, and it went away when I kicked it. So you might try that :)

And I'll bet Katy Perry's bass player isn't man enough wear anything like that.
It is kind of an odd comparison, though. Something from that era that would be comparable would be like Marie Osmond or something.

Speaking of the RNC, has anyone ever tried "Megasquash" or "tremelo" on the FMR applications page? http://www.fmraudio.com/rncapplicationspage.htm It sounds like some of you are using it mostly in the "paperweight" application. As for the other RNC, did anybody hear the song "Barracuda" after McCain...

Yamaha MLA7. It doesn't have sockets, but they can be easily added as it's a single sided pcb. These go for very cheap. Jim, What op amp do you use as a replacement for the MLA7? I have one of these and I like it stock, but I've been thinking about buying another one to try some mods on to see how ...
