Scope the signal and verify it's a click,or just the signal disappearing momentarily and reappearing.I went round and round with a Tascam MS-16 until I found out that it was there no matter what-especially if you recorded a 30-40HZ signal.

Generally, tape machines setup for 456,recording using 499/GP9/996 will sound like the high end is exaggerated due to the machine being under biased for the tape.Running 456 on a machine biased for 499/996/GP9 will tend to sound muffled due to the tape being overbiased.

The original 38 would would let you hear tape with the track arming button down, then it would switch to source when you punched in and back to tape when you punched out. The they made them for awhile with hearing source with the track armed in the stop mode. The too many people bitched about that and...

urei 1176 woes

Hello all,I have a pair of older black face 1176s with the same problem.Symptom is both will peg the meter when put in the meter GR mode.No limiting Both pass audio w/o problems. Common problem? Any ideas? Is there a modern cross referenced replacement for Q1?
Thanks

The 900 tape will be "underbiased" on your machine. This will give you an exaggerated,(brighter), top end with an increase in distortion-which you may like.I've had clients that use the higher output tapes that don't want their machine re-biased correctly because they like the way it sounds-and it's ...

And swapping out a PCB that has at best 10 components on it is a sign the shop doesn't know what's going on-and there is a difference between the older and newer version of the 38.

There are transistors on the I/S/R PCB that switch relays on the R/P cards.Being all channels are affected, it points to the I/S/R pcb assy. You could have a leaky transistor or cap.On some of the older 38s the bracket that holds the pcb would short to a trace on the pcb when it is reassembled. That w...

Put a junk reel of tape on it.Wind about half on the takeup side.Using the FFWD and RWD buttons, rock the tape back and forth.Watch when the tape changes direction.Does the tape move up or down?It shouldn't move vertically at all.Time for the fun "fine tape path alignment" procedure in the manual.Loo...

It's a "wobbulated" bandpass filter. There was a circuit in a old Popular Electronics that used close to the same circuit, and I think PAIA offered a kit at one time.
