Re: Thunderbolt to Firewire or Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2?

Pardon my slowness, but your first sentence is that Thunderbolt is both USB and Firewire, to me that says, you just need the right cable. Thunderbolt ports carry both USB and FireWire, and I believe DisplayPort and hdmi as well. I’m not deep into the technical details, but AFAIK, usb works by plugg...

Re: Thunderbolt to Firewire or Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2?

I'm "doing the double dongle" to use a motu 828 mkii over USB-C, works great! Spent more on dongles than the device. To clarify: You’re using it via FireWire from Thunderbolt 3. It’s important not to confuse the connector with the protocol. If you were using it through USB, a simple USB-C to USB-B ...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

that reminds me of a session where a guitar player brought in some kind of vintage echo/reverb unit (can't remember exactly what). at the end of a song we noticed it was picking up a local (Spanish language) radio station, coming through the guitar amp. so yeah, we kept that! Same session as the te...

Re: How-to Dongle?

the old laptop might be your only real option. I can't imagine Apple gear working on anything "open". And USB, FIrewire, and Thunderbolt are all completely different (and incompatible) protocols. This is partially incorrect. Thunderbolt INCORPORATES both USB and Firewire. USB 3.1 and Firewire are i...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

So many things in this thread. One of my old bands that was together in the early 2000's randomly got back together over the winter and recorded an entire album remotely. Most of the guys were new to recording at home and EVERY TRACK CAME TO ME IN STEREO, but they were all mono of course. So that w...

Re: DAW Recording on Mac - Startup drive as storage drive in 2021

Statistical wrench in the works: Having two drives multiplies the chances of having a drive failure. Especially if you factor in extra connectors and cabling as additional points of failure. (Anecdotal evidence: I've had more internal drive failures on production machines due to defective cabling th...

Re: DAW Recording on Mac - Startup drive as storage drive in 2021

I always recommend a separate drive for the work material. Less stress on the buss master in the motherboard. Less traffic going to and from the system SSD. Some people think it's ok. Until the SHTF. This thinking makes sense when you consider computers modular builds where an S-ATA controller mana...

What are people's thoughts on iZotope's Vinyl plugin? It's free…

Though I rather like the idea of mixing the new vocals into the space where the old 78 RPM material isn't.

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise

...Waves CLA-LA2A and CLA-1176, that seem to just add noise without being able to shut it off (that I know of)... I own those. They have buttons for noise type, and OFF, at the bottom center of the plug in. Most plug ins that have that noise stuff do, check the manual or with their makers. I like i...

What a loss. Between him and Jamerson, they covered most of what I consider awesome in bass playing.
