I was able to find a BSS AR-133 active direct box for around $120, which is obviously more than you want to spend, but sounds good and worth it. Seems clean to me.

Try a SM7 with a Grace 101 or a FMR RNP. I think these very well might work for your voice and lots of other stuff. I think he pres are both around $500-600 and the mic $300 used - $400 new.

Does anyone feel like they absolutely must mix with a sub? If so, why? and what kind of music are they making?

You can get an Old School Audio 8 space lunchbox and 2 pres for around that. I have an MP1-L and it is sweet. I like on everything(ac. & elec. guitars vocal, bass, drums) so far, but it particularly excels on snare and kick.
