Not sure what kind of budget you have, but if you're operating on a shoestring, a entry level Lexicon (mpx100) is a good value -- sure the verbs aren't on par with the mpx500 or higher, but it's not bad . Also, the TC Electronics M300 is pretty decent for the money. Actually, I was kind of curious w...

Got mine a couple weeks ago and honestly.......I haven't grinned over a new piece of gear in a looooong time, but I am with this guy. The onboard mics are surprisingly stellar.....I was fairly blown away. I recorded a folksinger recently with the H4 mounted on a tripod and came away with fairly cred...

Hi... I do this sort of thing fairly frequently and have found that you can seldom satisfactorily record a live act with mics in the room proper -- unless the acts in question are loud like a rockin' band. Unless your performer has everyone's rapt attention where not a whisper is heard from the crow...

Shawn Phillips --- 2'nd Contribution... My benchmark for sonic earcandy, effective use of dynamic range, inventive arrangements. Truly ahead of it's time for 1970, and production-wise it holds up. They weren't afraid of leaving a few wicked transients in the mix back in the day -- you've gotta have ...

Kelley Stoltz has recorded all of his releases with the 388 in his home studio....Very Beatle-esque, poppy....shades of psych. Very cool arrangements and he's another wunderkind who plays everything.

Interesting thread...... I agree, having used inverters in an audio setting -- noise always seems to creep in, and that is truly maddening. If tone is not particularily an issue (and I concede... when it is not?) a little Roland Micro Cube is actually not a bad noisemaker. And it runs off batteries....

(Though it's always fun to sing along with cheesy Linkin Park songs whenever they come on the radio: "I've felt this way before... so INSECURRRRE!!!") Ummmm.......no.....it's not. But I agree with you re. digital earbleed syndrome......that's why I'm tracking to my Tascam 234 4 track more than anyt...

How did Bob (Dylan) record his debut album ??
Hey, all.... Got a question for ya -- I'm asking on behalf of a young, incredibly literate and prolific folksinger from Minnesota for whom I've recorded a few demos. He's Bob's biggest fan, and does emulate Bob, though not slavishly -- he's got a number of tricks up his sleeve to call his own. Styli...

Give Gene Vincent's Be-bop A Lula a listen....closely. I agree with all of the suggestions above, but I've been fascinated with this 1956 recording forever. It was cut in Owen Bradley's studio in Nashville for Capitol, and featured a new echo/reverb approach devised by engineer Mort Thomasson. Hones...

No need to be so obsequious and apologetic here -- everybody here has had their first or second post, and I'd like to think that there are no stupid questions. Well....maybe the one about....nah, strike that. No stupid questions. Most of us here, dare I say more than most recording boards are more t...

Thanks for the ideas re. this beast...... Hmmmm.....data recorder.....well, it really looks like it's from the 60's (at least!).....Well, couldn't be much older than than that -- they didn't even have 8 tracks commercially produced 'till what....the mid 60's? So, as to being a data recorder.......hm...

AMPEX 1" 8 track Reel to Reel
Hey, just wanted to pick your collective brain, folks.... I've got an opportunity to pick up (literally -- it's heavy) an old Ampex 1" 8 track Reel2Reel and I'm wondering if it's worth anything? I don't have need for it myself, but of course see the possible opportunity here. I did not commit the mo...

Hey, THANKS to all respondees....... Arneal.....yeah, I've since gone back and done some minor tweaking, eq'ing very slightly, rolling off the mic rumble -- that sort of thing. Also, were I to re-record it I think I'd insert a compressor for the vocal over peaking that your hear occasionally -- wasn...
