doves - some cities
this band consistently amazes me with their production. very extreme for what is essentially pop music. great contrasts of gritty, distressed sounds and crystalline choruses and keys etc.. distorted drums and modulated pianos... also there some really nice dark vocals - see the storm - anybody recog...

drum overheads - getting a good ride cymbal sound
this past year i got a pair of 451's (newer) and have been using them for drum overheads which i like but i am having a hard time getting enough definition on the ride cymbal - how low do you guys put your overheads? it seems like the 451's, although they are cardoid - aren't a very tight pattern an...

If you have a great drummer with a good kit in an appropriate room you can record drums with 1 mic and they'll come out awesome... . i agree that the player/instrument/room are huge factors but i'm not as sure that a single mic is going to give you what you need to later in the mix - especially on ...

on 6 channels i'd go for: kick tucked a little inside for top and back enough for some good beef too snare - top 2 overheads - spaced pair - not too tight on the cymbals 2 spaced room mics or 2 toms depending on the song and room based on a quick listen of your stuff i think you're going to want to ...

Our producers used to put Marvin Gaye at the very top of his range (in his opinion it was beyond) and then punch in his vocals phrase by phrase. I'm sure this was one of the things that drove him to want to produce himself. The echo (reverb) was a mix of live chambers and an EMT plate. The new conv...

Sam Cooke recorded some of his material at United Western. I'm pretty sure he didn't record anything at Stax. I've seen photos of Sam singing into a RCA 77DX and a Neumann U-47 or U-48 at United. Check out the Night Beat album, in particular. It's an amazing recording and you can easily tell which ...

HELP!! high pitched noise related to computer somehow.....
