normalling gear to inserts...
so we were talkin at the studio tonight and one of the assistants who has been there for a while said that even if the insert is not engaged, signal will still flow any gear that is hardwired to it. I thought if the insert wasn't engaged, it was bypassed. what's the deal 'eh? Thanks. (oh yeah, and i...

I would like a touch screen computer to use with pro tools If I could just move all the crap around on the screen with my hands (or both hands) instead of having to grab a mouse or use keyboard shortcuts, my workflow would speed up about 10 times i think... because even a control surface is an extr...

So I stopped by over there today finally. Got the damn t-shirt!!! One of the guys also showed me around the facility. It appears to be true that they do tune mics with their ears...and the sound of their own voices. The room they do tuning in is quiet enough to drive a man mad! It's also enough to t...

what piece of gear do you geuninely wish existed?
Something that would be able to use a lot and that would help you out in your tracking/mixing/whatever it is that you're doing. What kind of creative ideas can you come up with?

analogy: RAM holds everything you're workin on, right? it's like a work table I guess. If you have a small table and lots of shit to do on that table, it gets cramped and is a pain in the ass an inefficient, ya work slower cuz you have to work around so much crap. bigger table = easier and faster to...

if smoking doesn't clog up your sinuses then you should be fine with that. you want to use headphones to drown out outside noise, you might wanna research "noise cancelling" headphones. I've never used any, so I don't know how good any of them are. but you'd be able to listen quieter...don't wanna b...

you could always ask them ahead of time if they want you to point out things that aren't quite right. that way if you notice somethin you can say somethin and they can't get pissed. besides, you're just tryin to help them. for instance, a guy i know was recording a band and this one part was just wr...

Did you notice where the smoke was coming from? Did the board go dead? nah I wasn't in the room when it happened and never went in as it wasn't my place so I don't know where the smoke came from. but the board didn't go dead. It was a just a piece of outboard gear installed into the board, a compre...

If it really was a transformer, thats pretty scary since a transformer is just a bundle of wires. Had to be something catastrophic to cause one to burn up. I'm no tech, but the head tech guy said it was a transformer, or so he thought. and a few people were freakin out a bit, so it seemed kinda cat...

awesome thread. and if you say you are studying acoustic guitars as in learning to play them, nothin wrong with spendin less than 500 on it, there are plenty of decent/good sounding guitars out there for cheap. I don't have the money to spend on anything over 500 bucks right now, but I just got an i...

I've been wondering the same thing to. That one mic they have with the interchangeable capsules (251, 67, 47, and 12) seem kinda cool. It's kinda hard to believe that just changing the capsule is really gonna get you all of those mics but ya never know. Also, they are supposed to be hand-tuned (ear...

so in a session today (one I only WISH I was workin on) the assistant runs into the lobby and tells me to call some of the guys cuz they smelled fire...i asked the head tech guy later on what it was and he said a transformer burned up really bad in one of the mods made to the desk (Neve 8078). It wa...
