Re: M/S on the mix - am I doing it right?

A very interesting article on 'stereo shuffling' techniques that can be used with MS in mixing/mastering by one of the true audio geniuses, Michael Gerzon: http://www.audiosignal.co.uk/Resources/Stereo_shuffling_USL.pdf (Everything in the Gerzon archives is worth a read, although a few of the articl...

Re: repairing a TRS jack on Hafler Pro 2400

Or, if the legs of the replacement TRS jack don't quite match the holes on the PCB (chances are 4 of 6 will fit) and the legs cant be bent to fit, just drill a couple of holes in the right place and then bridge over to the pads on the underside with a bit of solder. If the nut is being used to help ...

Re: Plug-in suggestions for the minimalist studio

The Airwindows site https://www.airwindows.com/ has some really interesting plugs and somehow it just feels right to support a guy like Chris Johnson in his endeavours.

Re: What are your influences?

I haunt several different audio & recording forums regularly. What I really like about TOMB is the fact that so many musicians hang out here. It gives proper perspective: a great recording always starts with a great performance. The obligations of a good recording engineer (also a producer) are simp...

Re: What are your influences?

Silly me. When I saw that the thread title, I assumed the question "What are your influences" was asking about engineers, producers, maybe even hardware and software... in which case, I would have replied Gert Palmcrantz, David Chesky, Peter Moore, Al Schmidtt, Rudy Van Gelder, Norman Granz, Tommy L...

Re: M/S guitars and other stuff

Yeah, I'd do it as a width/depth enhancer for a single guitar. It would be weird to have two guitars in M/S because their mids would both have to shoot down the middle, it'd be like a stereo enhanced pair of mono guitars.... maybe cool though, ya never know. No reason you can't pan an MS guitar in ...

Re: Fabric for bass traps/absorbers

If you want your free-standing gobos to have more LF (bass) attenuation, try hanging heavy rubber mat - like the ribbed stuff you see in commercial halls and entrances - from the top of the frame (don't attach at the sides or bottom). Sandwich the mat between two layers of fibreglass / rockwool if i...

Re: ghost power supply buzz?

Got it. Its the 16 channel Spirit Studio and I think the CPS 150 is spec'ed for up to 24 channels in this instance (I believe the 32 channel version comes with the CPS 275). Anyway, the Soundcraft PSU are notoriously unreliable according to the interweb - that's why I upgraded some components, as re...

Re: ghost power supply buzz?

Wait. I have a Soundcraft CPS 150. You guys are saying it is the bridge rectifiers causing the buzzing noise, not poor construction of the transformer? I had always assumed that it was loose laminations or windings on the transformer that cause the 60 cycle hum. I have attenuated the buzz to a reaso...

I concur with using Reaper - and there is a JS plug-in for amp/cabinet modeling and you also get a drum machine included. Although, I use Reaper all the time, I don't use these functions, so I can't really comment on them except to say they are part of the great deal that is Reaper. For audio interf...

Re: Listening to music ... like this?

The last line of the CNN article cited by the OP sums up the virus dilemma: "Meanwhile, some partygoers are opting for illegal raves, with some events attracting thousands of people." We can't bring this pandemic to an end while this attitude persists. Even if a successful vaccine is developed, the ...

Re: Replace my monitoring amp with an old Crown?

ART SLA1 or SLA2 should be readily available in North America and the price is right - currently $240 at Sweetwater and usually less than $100 on CL or Fleabay. I have 3 of these little suckers. They put out an honest 100W a side (200W for the SLA2), take up 1RU and can run w/o the fan unless driven...

Re: Cabling: What's the cheapest 24 channel TRS snake you'd buy?

The robustness of the connections is the important consideration. Hosa etc. is fine for "behind the rack" life but the molded strain relief at the connectors will beak with heavy use (plugging/unplugging). Hard to go wrong with anything using Neutrik connectors. The multicore wire is probably not as...
