Re: Everything new is old again

Perhaps this is an oversimplification, but I think the musicians and fans who are really into music and history will will seek out the influences themselves and be aware of them. When I was a wee lad and first heard the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. I went back and also listened to the blues artis...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

silversound, please clarify your question about innovation. What do you mean exactly? Do you mean the ProTools software/hardware/plug-ins setup is not innovative? That it doesn't allow innovation in some way? That it is more or less innovative than an analog system or comparable digital system? And ...

Re: 2" 16-track vs Pro Tools HD

Well, you get what you pay for, don't you? Sounds like that situation is entirely ProTools' fault...NOT! Seems like the newbie engineer in question was entirely capable of making a shitty recording on 2" 16 as well. And the more we hear about these projects, the less it sounds like a "direct A/B lis...

Re: Hi hat mics

I use the 451, but only because I have one. I think on the ablum I'm working on now we just used stereo overheads, and then put an SM81 on the hat for a hi-hat overdub. Point of trivia: Gary Richrath, ex-lead guitarist for REO Speedwagon, tells a story about mixing one of the tunes for the band's 19...

Re: 2" 16-track vs Pro Tools HD

>>>>I think an absolute moron could make tape sound good>>>> Could you tell that to the absolute morons who engineered my last tracking session in a "real" studio on a "real" format and couldn't keep the tape speed constant enough so that the song would be in tune with itself from beginning to end? ...

Re: I just saw Radiohead live in St. Louis.

The show at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin was amazing.

National Anthem and Myxomatosis back-to-back!

Real glockenspiel on "No Surprises!"

FOREVER.

Distorted/filtered vocals.

7-string or detuned guitars.

Re: HOW OLD ARE YOU???

I'm 34. I've been playing guitar since I was six, performing live since age nine. I play bass as well, and am passable on keyboards and drums if you do lots of editing after I play my parts. Played in bands in high school, recorded my first "album" on a Yamaha cassette 4-track in 1986. I have a degr...

Re: E-mac for recording?

I use an eMac with my Digi002 (ProTools) rig and it's great. The 002 is a Firewire unit so I don't miss the PCI slots, and the machine is very stable so far. Highly recommended.

Re: recording dripping wax

I agree with all three of the previous posts: if you can't get the mic close enough because of the camera, record it later. Also, eleven times out of ten the sound you get isn't representative of what people expect to hear from that visual anyway, so you'll have to use some other sound as a substitu...
