Re: List your engineering strengths and weaknesses.
strengths: - gear building, modifying, repairing - signal routing, patchbays - can mic an upright bass to sound nice (I play one) - skeptical about changes in sound from voodoo so when a change makes it sound different, it probably does. weakness: - lack of simplicity in tracking ... and - try to le...

Re: Buying a hard disc recorder...
I've got the Alesis HD24, using it with a Tascam DM24. Both have been rock solid, except make sure you use it with word-clock in a digital environment. Optical sync can cause dropouts - took me a while to figure this out. Editing is a bit of a pain but it does have a nice scrub function. And you can...

I meant MD421. I don't remember which I used on the sax. I've got it written down somewhere.

Re: Your recent recordings and gear used.
I just do quick demo recording for people, so all of these were done really quickly. http://www.baileysbeads.com/scripts/music.pl The first three were my recordings. Two passes - guitar first, then vox, two takes. No punches. Used the whole second take. Total time, about half an hour. Vocals: TLM103...

Re: so whats everyone been doing sorry cgarges im excited
Worked. Found an error in a flow test bench. Found an error (wrong resistor value) in a discrete compressor I'm building that would limit its output swing. Also, I found the rectifier needs some tweaking and filtering because I get a lot of ripple in the control voltage and the threshold is quite hi...

Re: My Tascam DM24 will not boot properly
Hold down 2nd F and HIGH (eq) and - (LIBRARY) - they're all within one hand's reach, while powering the unit up. If that works for you, try selecting SRAM INIT and see if that wakes it up. You can do a bunch of stuff in that diagnostic mode. Also, check the version while you're at it. 2.10 is the la...

Re: Punching In/Out on an Otari MX5050 MKIII
I haven't done this on your particular machine but I have done it on a Tascam, but basically here's what you likely need to do: You'll need the head mode switch to sync (not repro) so you monitor off the record head. You need to do this for overdubs too, to get rid of that delay. Same mode for overd...

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
All guitar solos are over rated! and what about bass solos? Those are even embarasing to listen to! I dunno, but I've often admired Edgar Meyer's solo bass work. I find a lot of electric bass solos don't seem to have a point, just a lot of notes, but my musical tastes are more along the lines of cl...

Re: Sync-ing an ADAT and a DA.38?
It can be done but not that easily with the 38. There are two ways I'm aware of. If you can get ahold of a DA88 with a sync card you can do it if you record SMPTE from the SY88 on an ADAT track. Set the SY88 to ABS timecode and the ADAT's and DA88's will sync as if they were all the same type of mac...

Re: payola?
In Alberta, Canada, we have a publicly supported radio station, CKUA, and it plays basically what the listeners want. Payola is not really accepted in this sort of radio format. They are getting more listeners as people are getting driven away from mainstream radio. Anyways, check out http://www.cku...

Re: Building Microphone for Vocals
http://www.gyraf.dk/ I've done it, though you can buy a cheap tube mic up here in Canada for about $260 (Apex 460 at Long and Mcquade). I used that as my housing and power supply. I don't really enjoy working on a lathe or that sort of thing. I gutted the rest of the mic, then I put in a replacement...

Re: Disappointment with Verb boxes. Echo chamber Love thread
Well, not totally, but sorta. I really liked the sound of an empty metal grain bin. Well, not completely empty. Usually me, a shovel, and a few bushels of grain that need to be cleaned out. My basement is pretty muddy sounding except on upright bass - I love the sound down there. I've also used an e...

Day: tested software for a new engine controller module.
Evening: installed the remainder of the floor in my new vocal booth, temporarily set up foamy corner fills and diffusors to see how the room sound changed. Installed MLS software on my PC to help see what the acoustics are like.
