Re: A drum bus compressor odyssey

I'd stick with the Symetrix and put the money in the bank. On the drum compression front, mixing a record now and the drums were sounding ok but kinda thin. I had a bunch of compression going already, and eq didn't seem like the answer. As I've often done over the last 25 years, I said "what would T...

Re: OT: Albini Does It AGAIN!

That was the one! I was just listening on a little boombox and it sounded killer, gonna put it up on the real speakers tonight and bask in it. I agree, Steve's a perfect match for them, track 2 off "Sovereign' has been a reference forever, just amazing sounding. Lots of records sound worse the loude...

Re: new one, by me (Montana Book Club)

I just said this same thing on Jay Reynolds' post, but this record is also terrific, was a pleasure to work on, and you all should listen to it!

Re: OT: Albini Does It AGAIN!

I put on a Neurosis record the other night, wondering "did Steve do this one?"

As soon as the drums came in: "Yep".

I recall reading that there were some months where he was able to pay the whole Electrical payroll with just poker winnings.

Re: Studio websites?

Eric, your site looks good on a laptop, I didn't check it on my phone, but yeah as digitaldrummer said, gotta make sure it looks at least presentable on a phone, I had a few hangups there when I redid my site a couple years ago. I mainly want to see pix of the room(s). ESPECIALLY if it's a mastering...

I didn't know that! Do you know of anyone doing that in a studio setting though?

you cannot trap a null away.
You absolutely can.

I give up!

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

Right. I should've mentioned before that you can't just look at the freq response, you need to look at the decay time as well. In an untreated room, the decay time will be really long, especially at low frequencies. All that ringing is what causes the peaks/nulls. The only way to shorten the decay t...

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

He didn't add any extra treatment, he just moved the speakers. Obviously finding the best spot for the speakers/listening position is step one. If someone has a huge null at 80, it's not because there isn't enough 80 in the room, it's because that freq is getting cancelled at the listening position....

Anyway, no amount of treatment is gonna get rid of that null
???

That's exactly what proper room treatment does.

I don't feel like arguing so I'll just say that going from a 15db null at 80 to half that at 95 is a HUGE improvement and losthighway I hope you did a little celebration dance.

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

You need more treatment, not a sub. A sub is only going to make it worse right now. Your problem is almost for sure SBIR from the front wall. Maybe the side walls as well. I could reconfigure the stuff I did on the front corners to include more fluffy pink stuff. If I remember, the way it is framed ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Hahaha, you have a gift!

Went to the local guitar shop yesterday and bought an MXR Phase 95, which is the phase 90 and phase 45 circuits in one pedal. Dunno how much the phase 45 will get used but the 90 is pure EVH bliss and I'll probably never turn it off.
