Please keep an eye on the voltage supplied by your UPS when not powered by the wall socket. As these things age, they will lose voltage slowly. I'm pretty sure that was the cause of a prematurely failing power supply on my mac. It was only after it failed that I metered the UPS to discover it was on...

Non audio, automotive: holding the exhaust system together on a 500 hp 1973 Dodge Challenger until I could afford to get it fixed. Non traditional audio use: finding the right position for an intermittent wireless mic cable then gaffers taping the bejesus out of it so it couldn't move. Nonstandard T...

Have you considered getting a used eight input unit like a MOTU 828 unit with ADAT and adding an ADAT eight channel expander? I have a MOTU 828MK2 and an Alesis AI3. Both of these can be had used for very cheap. My local Craigslist has an 896 on sale for $300 right now.

Although it's not been run in a while, I still hang on to my Tascam 234, and some NOS cassettes. I actually recorded a friend with it a few years ago because it was easier than dragging the computer and racks of gear out of my place. It has indeed made recordings that folks could not believe it was ...

If I weren't down here in Virginia, I'd be awfully tempted to give this thing a good home. As was pointed out to me by the infamous Fletcher over at ProSoundWeb, it's a monaural unit, notice the single speaker, which in my mind makes it even cooler. Mono vinyl the new standard for indie punk rock! P...

I acquired an old Montgomery Ward toob guitar amp that hadn't seen the light of day in forty + years. Went over the thing with various weapons of cleanatude down to the smallest detail. After spending a inordinate amount of time on it I definitely felt a bond had been created. The trouble is, becaus...

Hello guys, As it turns out I sadly decided to forego the Distressor, at least for a little while. I'm sure it would have been great, but didn't feel completely comfortable with the purchase right now. I try to be frugal in how I spend money and it has worked well for me so far, as I haven't paid a ...
The distressor has very high THD for solid state, about .4%. It has a bunch of diode strings to add more "aural excitment". It's about the closest thing to a guitar fuzz box you can buy in a rack. If you need a comp/limiter with calibrated time constraints, the widest attack/re...

You are so right about the other things that could be purchased for the same price. I already have the 160's, rnc's, 166's and such, and frankly, I'm considering the FMR PB6A as an alternative to the Distressor. I guess I'm intrigued by the idea of the versatility of the EL8. Paired with the M610 I ...

Thanks RR, I always try to acquire equipment that is at least a little better than what I already own. I'd rather grow into something than out of it. I've learned the hard way that much of the "entry level gear" I've purchased ended up being a disappointment and a waste of money. Better stuff motiva...

Distressor... Too good for home recording?

Always loved the idea behind the Distressor in that it can emulate the sound of many compressors. I have gassed to own one since they first came out. If just for the learning experience of experimenting with different compression techniques. I do like to track with a bit of compression, especially f...
"cool. now i can have some fun." nice is nice, but character is priceless.
I just realized how true this is myself. DC area Tape Oppers...September 7th at Chucks?

I was wondering if anyone in the area was thinking of going to the Telefunken demo at Chucks on the 7th of September? For those not in the DC area, "Washington Music Center" is the last large, independent, family owned, music store in the area, and a DC institution. It's an old school, packed to the ...
