Re: I have to do a metal project.

Most of my experience has been with metal projects. I've done live sound and recording for metal bands excessively for the past 5 years. I'm not the greatest, and I have a relatively modest studio, but I make it work, and I always get compliments from the bands. Here is what I always do, might be a ...

Re: Removing vocals from a track.

The phase thing is the general idea, but in many cases you might risk loosing your bass track. There is a remedy for this, maybe someone knows a better way. This will especially be effective if it was mixed for surround sound. The center channel uses a dedicated frequency response, sorry, don't reme...

Re: How would you use these 3 fx units?

I really like the TC Reverbs, more than the lexicons. The waves plugins are nice, the worst thing about them are the interfaces. I've been using the parametric EQ's and the L1-Ultramaximizer for mastering lately, and I like what they're doing. Some people say the L1 squashes it too much.. Of corse y...

Re: Why can't I hear the drums anymore in today's music??!

I have to agree. I listen to a good variety of everything, but I'm usually listening to alternative or new rock. I have satalite radio, and I can tell a lot of the songs they play are MP3's. Very distorted high end, so bad that you can hear cymbals. Overall sound lacks definition as if they're playe...

Re: need help with noise from guitar amp trying to record

I'm all about the hush, but I've found that by the time I get the threshold high enough to kill all the noise, I've degraded my sound. Simple solution, 2 Hush's. I run one hush after all effects but before preamp. I set the threshold just before I notice my sound starting to decay, then I run a seco...

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

sm-58. Everyone,m from walter sear to you, say its a great microphone. But i just hate it. Its bland and boring, and I just don't like the shape of the sound. I have been using the shure 55 reissue on everything and have been much happier. Of course at work, 58's are all we have. They do take a bea...

Re: BEST $100 snare mic (for recording)

I've been using this mic combination on snare for about 2 years now, because it blows away everything else I've tried, regardless of cost.. EV ND168 on top (picked up for $65 on closeout at GC) and a Marshall MXL V57M half way between snare botton and floor, slightly angled toward the kick mallot. I...

Best Vocal Chain Ever.. Opinions?

I'm just starting to get more serious about my recordings. I recently purchased a Rode K2 and a Focusrite Twintrak Pro as my first mic and preamp over $500. Well, I'm pretty happy with the combination on most applications, but man, the focusrite compressor is a vocal killer.. It makes the vocalist s...
