They are notoriously slow. The Fender Discussion Page has this subject pop up every month or so. Seems like folks usually get their stuff, just slowly.

The 610 is a descent DI, guitar and Bass, and a nice pre. I really like it with my 4047 mic. I've considered getting a pair of them but I've decided to get the Hamptone JFET pre instead. It is, IMHO, a better DI and I like the Hamptone pre a bit better. Same money too. So get a Hamptone JFET would b...

Cheapest mic for acoustic guitar: Oktava 219

Hated it on everything else. Great on acoustic guitar. I got the idea from Larry Crane, he had one at Jackpot years ago.

Related tip on 'live feel' If you are doing a layering style 'overdub record' try cutting bass and drums at the same time. It is so much easier for both of them to play together and it brings a lot of glue and feel to the track. That seems to be the key. Have them together and the rest will fall in...

It's in your best interest to take some time with the drummer and bassist aside and spend one or two hours with them doing this exercise. As a drummer I do this constantly to improve my tempo, and I've found that even an hour or two of doing this will greatly increase a players understanding of ryt...

Drummers need to understand tempo. If they can't play to a click, they don't truly feel and understand tempo yet. They need to learn to be better drummers. I'm all for ditching the click and recording natural... ...but it's a right you earn by developing a deep understanding of pulse. 90% of the ti...

when you record without a click, is it noticeable and bothersome that the tempo changes? if you think the tempo changes negatively affect the sound of the recording, then your drummer needs to learn to play to a click, or you'll get to spend a ridiculous amount of time editing and probably end up w...

How to Track and keep the vibe

So I'm tracking original tunes I worked up with my band over the years. Our previous recording were fairly sloppy live ventures with poor tempo. I want to make a fairly tight fairly polished recording. I've been playing guitar to a click and then having the drums and then the bass track their parts....

I've just been trying out the Hampone JFET for the past week. Did a bunch of comparisons. For other pres I've got an Old Great River, an Amek / Neve, a Hamptone Tube Pre, a Solo 610 an Altec tube pre. The Hamptone JFET is a great pre. It wasn't always my first choice but more often than not it was. ...

I didn't like my 121 too much until I got an Amek pre / eq. Made a huge difference. I mainly use the 121 on guitar cabs, old fenders. I find this combo to be great from clean to dirty overdrive tones.

Tough to recommend a particular guitar / brand. There are so many builders out there now. I'd suggest you hunt around until you find one in your price range that has a good voice. A good classical will sound good even with crummy strings on it. That being said strings are really important. I play cl...

The Celestian Golds are getting great reviews. I haven't tried them yet. The Vintage 30's are one of my favorites, especially for dirty grungy amps. :)
