I have a special playlist that I always refer to that consists of about 20-30 songs. All the songs are ones that I feel sound exceptional as far as the mixing and mastering, but also musically and arrangement-wise. Every once in a while I'll add or remove a song, but it's mostly stayed the same for ...

So many gems here! A great deal of the important stuff has been covered, but here's a few conclusions I've arrived at... 1. Good is better than bad, but interesting is WAY better than good ... And sometimes bad can be better than good in an interesting, well-presented way. Example... Mix for the lis...

You guys have been sharing so many ideas, and meanwhile I've been an awful human being with internet probz that has been neglecting to point out how awesome these ideas are. (3G connection on a phone is only good for lurking. Quoting and what not? No way, Jos?.) Most songs are demoed "cheap and dirt...

For me, a Picasso drawing in pencil can be as interesting as a Picasso painting in oil - somethings he did, pencil was perfect. A '57 is not like a cheap guitar with bad action and intonation and scratchy pots and intermittent connections - it's like a Melody Maker, simple, limited and functional. ...

Just for fun? Can anyone guess the type of microphone used on the toms in this song?

There's a very clear, isolated hit at 1:03.

This might be completely sacrilegious advice if you're taking more of a natural/jazz approach, but you might consider overdubbing cymbals. It can be difficult to get an excellent drum sound and an excellent cymbal sound from the same capture. For example, I'll be focusing on mixing a section with li...

C'mon, I want to hear about some more approaches! The main problem I see with recording forums is that everyone talks about the tools as opposed to the technique. Methodology and approach are the creators of sound, not microphones, pre amps, or converters. Let's hear about how you create! I guess it...

I just wrapped up a record that started as an online collaboration with a guitarist who lives 4-5 hours away. I sent him a bunch of tape-loop based pieces I'd been working on. He added songs and sent them back. I chopped up his songs, shuffled them, added arrangements and sent them back. And so on ...

What's your favorite production approach?

Alright, so there are some obvious tried-and-true methods such as having a great room and great musicians and capturing a great live performance, or the opposite end of the spectrum - programming everything yourself one at a time, but what about everything in between? Describe a time when an approac...

Despite how cliche this sentiment is, it's probably the most helpful thing you'll ever need to know about recording (or anything else in the creative arts for that matter): "It's not what you use, it's how you use it." Or, phrased another way, is possibly my favorite quote from a Tim Crich book on r...

Great stuff, man. Really nice production and sounds. Great vibe. I'm really amazed at how many great artists there are out there just putting together stuff and throwing it up on the webs. Hey thanks, I really appreciate it! Yeah, the amount of music out there (both good and bad) is continually sno...

Brand new TOMB member. Let me know what you think!

Condensed version of a long story: I started learning how to record in order to work on my own music but gradually transitioned into recording other artists and less of myself. It got to the point where although my recording abilities improved greatly, I hadn't recorded my own music in over 4 years....
