Conversely, blowing $7k on a U47 will not make you sound like Frank Sinatra or John Lennon.. but a good singer /performance will sound great with even a $79 mic.

Quantegy makes 60 min cassettes as well.. The only cassette that has been giving me problems in the past 5 years has been TDK SA-X - stay away, they warble like mad.. Otherwise, any 60-74 min high bias (type II) will do. I've used other tdk's, maxell, fuji, rat shack, quantegy, sony..

As an aside, I have never met a mic I couldn't use. It may suck on vocals, guitar, and fiddle; but is perfect under a snare and on a harmonica. Too true.. - I use whatever's there and never ever say 'oh man, if I only had a jimmigajammboschnottzser I could record this guitar part right..' And, I ag...

Re: Why can't people just say stuff sucks?

I look for gear online often, since there's not really anywhere too close to audition things,.. <snip> Some gear sellers (mercenary comes to mind) will let you try something and return it, or so I'm given to understand. I hear you on the catch-phrases fuzzy-words reviews though.. One look at a rece...

Tape users' secret weapon: varispeed..

I usually do 3 passes of claps, one tracked way up, one tracked normal, one tracked way down.

You're so good to me also done. I'm done though. No more. Someone take "let him run wild". did you go for 'accurate' covers or 'totally my own style' covers? if it weren't hidden under a VEIL OF SECRECY i could tell you (or show you!) but you can email me? Who cares ? - do the song(s) however you f...

Just put up a mic and stand at least 4-6 feet away. get a few others to clap with you. track it 2 or 3 times and mix them together. Don't listen to any of the other passes as you're doubling/tripling it, it'll sound more loose that way.

.. If I'm tuning out of something, it's not really creative work. It's probably time to move on. I may still have to do it, but I know that no real creativity is happening, just setup/routine/busy type work. And yet, it's often that something worth committing to occurs right in the middle of the 's...

The V67 loves my voice. Never tried it as a room mic, but, as others have said, for male voices it can be very flattering.
