Cool video. Kick bodhran is right. An Arbiter Flat will get you there too. Very quiet, sort of midrangey kick sound when damped, very clear "bop kick" or almost electronic note when allowed to ring. Very versatile recording kick with a huge bottom when close mic'd but also fits into an "unplugged" o...

It's interesting how the telefunken 47's with different tubes got such different results. I don't want to say which numbers they are but you can tell from the poll too. What to make of this? The wunder mic was so clear and upfront. Yeah, maybe capsule differences too? I agree with your take on the ...

New Telefunken U47 vs. Clone (and a surprise) Shoot Out
The nice people at Barron Studios in Houston recently assembled three Telefunken U47 mics, a Lawson L47 and a Wunder Audio CM7 for a little "47" dust up. They threw in an AKG C414B / XLS as a reference. And then, much to my surprise, they included an OktavaMod MK-219 PE "just for fun". Well I had fu...

Re: Oktava MK219 modification for your mic...
In an earlier post, A-barr was sharp and questioned strdsk / Joey D. on an important point. "... triple twisted pair conductors ....are used in the most important area...the capsule to FET region. They are then....shrink wrapped." Joey D's use of twisted pairs in this application is poor high-Z prac...

Today is the first time I've seen this thread - though I've got two years of sent mail to Joey D (strdsk) providing mic mod tips and advice. I thought I was talking to a cash-strapped DIY'er all this time. In fact, I just came within days of modifying an MK-319 for him - I guess for "evaluation" pur...

Hey Qball ;) The ribbon in your mic was fine when I saw it last year. I don't believe the small Lundahll LL2912 was available at the time. It was developed to meet the demands of these smaller body ribbon mics. That's a pretty easy swap if you can make good, shiny (not dull, "cold") solder connectio...

RSM-3 and RSM-4
Looked at my RSM-4 and compared it to the RSM-3 today. The ribbon motors are similar in design concept, implementation is a little different. The RSM-4 has shorter magnets and ribbon than the RSM-3. The ribbon in the RSM-4 is symetrical in the magnet gap while the RSM-3 uses the Royer offset ribbon ...

Thanks for the props. RodC - that's amazing that 80% of the ribbon was touching the mesh! I've never seen one that loose. I've been wondering about the causes of the slack tension. I can think of three - 1.) poor surface contact between the clamps allows the ribbon to slide out. 2.) improper install...

A novice? Yes. A klutzy one? Maybe ;) The core task is to remove the top half of one ribbon clamp, pry the ribbon loose from the face of the bottom clamp, stretch the ribbon and re-clamp. Before that can happen you'd have to disassemble the mic. All these barrel type Chinese mics have the same basic...

They may not need re-tensionsing. Rock the mics slowly towards and away from you - rotate at least 45 degrees from vertical to allow gravity to pull on the ribbon. You won't hear any noise if the ribbon has some tension on it. If the ribbon is off-center against one magnet face or if it has an "S" c...

Got my (now discontinued ) RSM-3 today - inspected, repaired and modified it. First thing I noticed when I listened to it was the tell-tale sound of a ribbon too slack in the gap. Listening in headphones and rocking the mic back and forth (a test I always use with ribbons) produced a dragging "clang...

1. there seems to be way too much metal between whatever you are recording and the ribbon in this model, unlike the normal grille on most mics how would you mod that puppy to get the ribbon out in the air a little? A client sent me one with that intention. While it would have been possible to cut o...
