That may be the case though I also haven't heard that one before. Nevertheless, it's gotta give you more information than not monitoring through the playback head about the behavior of the tape. In the extreme for instance if the bias were messed up or the high frequency response was off a few db or...

Pro Tools HD accel cards etc.
Are there different versions of the HD Accel cards out there besides the PCI/PCI-e split? I read somewhere that they introduced the HD Accel cards in 2003. It seems like a long time to go in technology without significant changes somewhere. If one is looking for ProTools HD Accel stuff on the used m...

No joke amigo, google osx86 sometime. I hsve it installed on an external USB drive to boot my Dell as a Mac whenever I feel like it. Nevertheless if you can't manage to install XP on your computer I really wouldn't advise trying it. Sometimes you've got to do a bit more work to get drivers to work a...

With noise removal plug ins I've found that, the worse the problem is, the harder it is to come up with a truly satisfactory solution. Noise removal is not a miracle, it's an interesting tool that sometimes works. Sometimes it is just the thing to remove a little audible hiss from a a recording. Som...

Pro Tools HD Questions
I've been looking into buying a sort of "starter" Pro Tools HD system with the idea that it could be expanded later on. I was sort of surprised to see that the price of a HD accel card as a separate purchase was $4995.00, whereas the price for the same card as part of a system appears to be closer t...

If you have a deck with a record and playback head, then you can listen to the result (almost) instantaneously judge for yourself and adjust accordingly. I personally would not want to master to analog without having gone over the calibration of the deck fairly carefully (playback response, bias, re...

Pro Tools M-powered 8 and Profire lightbridge max outs
Oddly enough, I'm having a difficult time getting a definitive answer on these Protools m-powered questions. The digidesign site is helpfully full of marketing hype without any real clear information. I've heard that Pro Tools M-powered 8 would have a maximum of 18 inputs with the M-audio Profire li...

BASF is actually good stuff. It's what is (or was) a standard for high quality commercial music manufacturing. They had better tape and higher quality control than anyone else in that market. TDK also manufactured tape for commercial duplication. It was a little mellower sounding which was nice but ...

higher bias tapes actually require a higher bias voltage to sound right. Under bias a type 2 tape and you'll get horrible distortion maybe bad levels etc. Overbias a type 1 tape and you'll get "muffled sound". Most settings for cassette decks change both the eq and the bias for the tape in question....

Something like a used U87 is a crap shoot. I was doing tech work in this guys studio and he was complaining about something not sounding right. Put a his U87 and it sounded wierd. I asked him if he had any other LDC for a troubleshooting comparison with the same mic line mixer channel etc. "Just som...
