Now you're talking! The better deals are on the 1" machines. If you find a 2" 16 track for $1500 it will probably need a lot of work, or the heads will be shot. Whereas you can often find decent 1" 16 tracks in the $1000 to $1500 range. It is going to be Otari or Tascam, and either will be fine. Be ...

Hello Bootsy If you really need 16 tracks, rather get a 16 track machine and don't mess with syncronizing two of them. I don't know that the model 80 can be synchronised. I know that this was standard practice with ADATs, and of course pro analog machines, but it wasn't so common with the baby multi...

Hello Bootsy Your budget is pretty slim, but you may possibly pick up a Fostex B-16 on Craigslist for that. Shop around though for one that you can go and see working properly. I'd argue against buying one on ebay for that price since you'll have to add shipping onto that, probably around $100, and ...

Fostex 16 track half inch

If you are anywhere near Orange County California I have a Fostex G16S available.

But, like most examples of this model, a number of channels do not work because the caps need replacing.

On the up side, I don't want much for it.

Regards

Here's an Ampex 1" 8T near you: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/msg/2042447621.html FYI, the Otari MX-5050 series only went to half inch 8 track, not one inch. The Ampex is in a completely different league (it's also about 350 lbs heavier).:lol: Regards David Full disclosure: I sourced and rebuil...

Check the record head by playing in sync mode. If both channels play ok then the record head and all wiring in between is fine. I suspect that one channel will not have output, given what you have said so far. Next try switching the record and repro head connectors between their respective sockets o...

That mystery extra head in position 3 is a quarter track repro head, for playing tapes made on domestic machines. Since there is no switch on the head assembly (to go between 2-track and quarter track heads) I suspect that the extra head is wired to those extra card-less channels. I don't think they...

FS: MOTU 24I/O 24 channel converter with PCI-424

MOTU 24I/O 24 channel 96kHz/24bit converter (core unit). Includes the PCI-424 card (with its manual) and the long cable that connects it to the rack unit. I can't find the software disk, but you can simply download the appropriate software for your machine. I just went onto MOTU's web site and see t...

I gotta say that wanting to use up a couple of 14" reels of tape is not a good basis for choosing a tape machine. The criteria should be:

* Reliability/maintainability
* Sound
* Cost

The order that people put them in is primarily determined by their funds.

Good luck anyway!

I have a 24in/24 out XLR panel that can easily be converted into a stage box by reversing the connectors. I did it myself to a 16in/out version a while back and it still works great. You can have it for $40 plus shipping. That's under a dollar per XLR, and you get the panel too! PM me if interested....

This is absolutely the best way to get into ownership of a professional tape machine, unless you are able to pay big bucks for a fully restored one. From the sound of it there will be ample parts here to put together one - possibly two - machines. Be careful that the "B" and "C" electronics have to ...

Absolutely, yes it can be converted. You just need: * A 440 head assembly * More head cables, or get the cable box and cables from a 440 * To replace your 445 audio channels with 440 channels. * Control cables from transport to each electronic channel You now have a 440! Before you buy the audio cha...
